wont automatially turn on

upright freezer, interimiitently turns on, sometimes it will turn on, otherwise when temp goes up, if you hit the side of freezer with your hand it will turn on and run, stays at 0 degrees when it is on,

Hi,

What is the make and model number of the freezer?

Sounds like a faulty bi-metal defrost thermostat but won't know without the make and model number whether it has one or another type of sensor or it may be something else entirely that is just loose.
