Black stuff scratched inside screen, how to fix?

Hey iFixIt community,

Just got done with the long and tedious process of repairing an iPod Touch 4th generation. Unfortunately before putting the screen back on I accidentally scratched the black graphite-paint near the home button. Now there's a clear scratch under the screen that looks terrible. How do I fix this without getting another 50 buck screen? Should I scrape some of the black paint off the old digitizer and put it on the new? Please help!!

That's a great idea. I actually used black craft paint and it worked flawlessly. I'll have to use a sharpie if this problem ever comes up again.

I found that using a Sharpie Paint Pen works beautifully. NOT the Sharpie permanent marker, but the new Sharpie Paint Pen. You shake the pen, and press down on the tip to load the paint first, then gently dab the scratch area on the underside of the glass. Let it dry for several hours before reassembling your phone/tablet. Don't apply on the outside or it will show. The pens also come in white and a bunch of other colors so you can touch up the white or colored screens too.

No do not try to scrape off paint from another screen. Just go over it with a black Sharpie a couple of times (waiting for it to dry each time) and make sure it's dry completely before you apply it to adhesive. If you get too much on the area you can even it out with a Q-tip dipped in some Rubbing Alcohol.

Hi there, i have had this issue before, many times infact. Please take note of this, as i assure you this is the BEST solution you will find on the internet. Take the screen off, and mask off the area where you do NOT want to get sharpie. With some plyers, take apart the cartridge from your sharpie pen. Have some tissue at the ready, and squeese the sharpie pen cartridge with some plyers over the scratch. This will release a thick gloopy liquid from the cartridge which cannot be done by just drawing over it like the other answer suggested. As SOON as you do this, dab with your paper towel to make sure it doesn't spread anywhere else. Feel free to reply to this with any questions, but i have been searching on the internet for hours and not found anything that works like this.
