Weird line appears in corner

Hi all,

I just bought two Thunderbolt Displays from a single seller on Facebook Marketplace,

I briefly inspected the displays and did not notice any issues, when I connected the displays to my Mac mini at home after about five minutes the attached started to appear on the screen,

I tried connecting one of the monitors to my MacBook and again after five minutes the lines appeared, any ideas what this issue could be, is there any way to fix it or did I just get screwed out of my money?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit 1:

I also noticed that if I leave the display on the line starts to extend to the bottom right corner and then disappears, it’s really weird.

Do you see this line with a solid color block placed in the corner? To be clear you want the block to extend beyond the corner point where the effect is located. Post an image of it if you still see it. You may need to try different colors.

@danj I'll post pictures as soon as I get home.

How you perceive the colors on your display can be affected by many factors, such as ambient light, the position and angle of the display, and the age of the display. To accommodate for these factors, you can adjust your display using Display Calibrator Assistant.

Or kindly follow these guides and if they get rid of the issue.

@v3nuo - Neither of these Apple docs get into a display regularity at a given spot.

The first doc gets into an overall color shift of the displays image were the who image is tinted green or reddish. Clearly that's not the case here

The second gets into a scaling issue or global distortion, again not the issue here.

I could see how you could come to this conclusion but if you expand the photo you can see that difference in color is not coming from the end of the display but from the display itself.

@James Cannon Have you checked out the other monitor, is it the same issue?

@danj Thank you for your clarification, just try to help, will try to get precisely more solutions.

@v3nuo I have three of them, two out of the three have this issue. The two that are having the issue I bought from the guy on FaceBook the other one I've had for a while. I have tried connecting the two that are having the issue to different ports, tried without using Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and tried using a different Mac, none seem to fix the issue.

The block test isolated the issue down to a display image burn. This is when a the given pixel or group of pixels have been over biased so the in-plane switching (IPS) which controls the color of the given pixel is unable to enable the correct value to set the color correctly.

There is very little you can do to undo the damage. You might be able to force the IPS logic to fix its self by over saturation of the complimentary color within the given space. Basically we need a negative image of the same image to burn the display given pixels.

The only other option is replacing the full display assembly or the raw LCD panel. While not cheap these are very nice displays and still highly sought!

27" Cinema Display LCD Panel (Thunderbolt), Apple P/N 661-6028, LG panel LM270WQ1 (SD)(B3)

I have two my self, I would hate to try to replace them as I find most displays are not as nice as these, just perfection! If Apple where to come out with a 5K 32” or larger version with the same ports I would buy it! But as we know Apple won’t be doing that ;-{

Would that cause the lines to show up and disappear like they do?

It depends on the color the cells are producing. Note how your Orange & Blue image show it and not the Green.

@danj They appear and disappear right on the desktop, I don't change anything, I didn't even open any windows on that monitor. It does look like it appears on the green, it's just very light. Image burn would explain why the issue is in the exact same spot on both monitors though.

@James Cannon - What did you payoff the two displays? Does it make sense to fix or return?

完成的

@danj

I paid $450 for both and also received an Apple 61 USB-C power adapter, Apple 2m USB-C charging cable, Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter, and a case. So approximately $150 each if you take the other stuff into consideration.

I'd prefer to fix them, I'm really inpressed with them overall, so much so that I returned an iMac 4k and went with the Mac Mini instead.
