Why am I getting a flashing question mark folder?
I Installed one of your new SSD 1 Terabyte hard drives in my 2009 MacBook Pro and I’m getting flashing question mark when trying to start up. This happens weather I start holding the “command “ and “R” keys or just trying to start up normally. I also replaced the hard drive Data cable and still the same issue. So I’m thinking you guys sold me a defective hard drive. Also when I hook up my old hard drive it starts up fine.
How do I go about returning this faulty hard drive?
Nate.

Did you use the USB case to hold your new drive so you can format it and install the needed OS

No I didn’t. The way I’ve seen it explained on various videos is that you install the new drive into your computer first and then you go through steps to format and install the OSX to it through downloading. I haven’t seen anything on how to use that usb Box. The one I got is a hard material and closed on both sides. I don’t even see how a hard drive is supposed to fit in there. Like I said they give you no manual for this stuff.

@naymac1 - Did you not get this kit? MacBook and MacBook Pro (Non-Retina) SSD Upgrade Kit which comes with 'USB 3.0 External Drive Enclosure'
What I suspect got you confused is the newer 2011 systems onward offer internet recovery. Some of the 2009/2010 offered onboard recovery using a hidden partition on the drive to hold the needed files. But this is only possible with the newer OS-X releases these systems can run. And once you take the drive out you loose access to the hidden partition files.
