Water damaged iPhone EMI Shield getting hot

I have an iPhone SE that was liquid damaged, and I took the logic board out and cleaned it with 99% isopropyl alcohol a few times (following this guide: iPhone液体损伤的维修.) The phone works fine, but the EMI shield above the SIM card slot gets noticeably hot by the time it finishes booting up. I have not de-soldered the EMI shield. Any suggestions?

I know that are can get warm when it boots up. Whenever it comes to liquid damage you do want to inspect the entire board, including under those shields. I would just let it sit for about 10 minutes after boot up to see if that heat goes away. If it shuts off or stays hot, that’s when I would check under those shields.

I tried that, and the heat went away after about three minutes. I turned it off after about 4 1/2. It was only a little warm after the three minutes. Would you say that I could put it back together and use it safely? (It would be my main phone.)

@pizzaslice if you wan't longevity out of that phone, I would inspect under those shields but you'll need a hot air station to take that shield off but at the same time, if you're not experienced in microsoldering, you could float and move other components under the shield. I prefer not to perform liquid damage repair in my shop because of all the complications that can arise after the repair has been done. You'll either get a few days to a few years of use because it varies so widely.

If it does stop working, what would have gone wrong? Would it be repairable? This is my first time fixing a phone, but I'll probably start fixing more phones in the future, so if I use this one and it breaks, getting a new one shouldn't be too hard. Right now I'm using a 5c, so I want to get this SE working so I can upgrade.

@pizzaslice anything can go wrong with liquid damage. It's hard to give you an accurate answer to your question because of all of the factors that come into play. Whether or not it will be repairable, I don't know that either. Depends on whats damaged. Liquid damage isn't a very practical repair because of all the issues it can have. I don't like to do liquid damage repairs unless someone really wants it. I do inform them that there is absolutely no warranty on liquid damage so if it breaks the first minute you get out the door, they're SOL. Most shops will offer data recovery on liquid damage boards though.

@hootonberg Well, I put it back together and have been using it a little bit. It seems that it's always warm by that shield, especially when it's doing more processing. If it ends up fried I'll replace the logic board, maybe I'll just get another SE that I can get a working board out of. Also I don't need to worry about losing data since I have iCloud backup enabled. I suppose I just have to see what happens.
