Not booting- 1 beep every 3 seconds

I have an old 2008 iMac.

We are doing some home renovation and when we plugged the computer back in, it did not boot- the start up chime played and then a beep every 3 seconds.

I replaced the ram with ram from owc (same as previously). I cleaned contact surfaces with an eraser-in the computer as well.

I’m getting the same beep. I tried to start up in safe mode, etc- did not work. If left long enough, the beeping stops and a white screen remains.

Then if more time goes on, the Apple symbol comes up, then goes away- replaced with a 0 with a line through it. Then the ample symbol again- but nothing past that.

Any thoughts?

We live 2 hours + away from the nearest Apple store.

If I have a big issue, I don’t know if it is worth pursuing fixing - or if I should just admit defeat and purchase a new Mac. My files should be saved on an external drive, so I’m less concerned about what is actually on the computer.

Thank you so much in advance.

Fixing the Beep Error

The beep code One tone, repeating every five seconds can also mislead in older systems! We need to fix this first before we tackle the circle with a line through it - Prohibitory symbol

I have found a dead PRAM battery can also cause this. Remember you unplugged your system from power, so for awhile the system sat with no power connection! What people forget is the iMac uses vampire power stealing a small amount of power from the power cord to hold the settings, that way it’s not fully dependent on the lithium Ion battery.

You’ll need to replace the PRAM battery CR2032 3V lithium Ion button cell.

Follow this guide to get to it: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Front Bezel Replacement

You do want to zero its settings before you put the fresh battery in. With the old battery removed, with the power cord still removed, press and hold the power button to reset the SMC for a good 2 minutes. Then insert the new battery connect your keyboard and mouse and then lastly your power cord. But don’t turn it on quite yet!

We still need to reset the PRAM settings! Press these four keys together: Option, Command, P, & R keys as soon as you’ve press the power button to start the system.

At this point your system should no longer have the beep tone.

Fixing the Prohibitory Symbol

Hopefully all we need to do here is fix the Startup disk setting. So shut down your system and this time restart it pressing the Option (⌥)  key this will allow us to gain access to the Startup manager so you can select your boot drive How to select a different startup disk. If the drive fails to show up then you’ll need to replace it and install a fresh copy of your OS.

Let us know if that’s the case so we can dive into what you need to watch out for, while not hard there are a few things you’ll need to figure out before you start.

Hi i have a similar issue on a imac 20 early 2008, but the display never light up i only ear the chime sound every three seconds.

I’ve tried another ram kit that luckily i get from a scrapyard notebook, but nothing changed, you think that could be the pram battery? Or you have any sugestion on the culprit?
