Laptop turns on, displays Asus Logo, then shuts down. Cannot go to BIO

Hi! So recently, my UX31A has been shutting down at random periods and when I press the power button, the logo shows up, but it shuts down. This has happened a couple of times, and I wait for a a day or two and it works again. Anyone have any ideas for a permanent fix? I have the repair kit, but I do not have access to extra hardware or thermal paste. Thanks!

Hi @randomperson1 ,

Does it so this with the charger connected and switched on?

Is the fan vent clear and unobstructed?

Check in Event Viewer to see if there are any Critical, Error or Warning events showing that may give some idea of what is happening at the time that it shuts down after working correctly for a while.

If Win 10 installed, try creating a Win10 battery report to check the state of the battery.

Thanks for your response @jayeff. Nothing happens when my laptop is not connected to the charger. When my laptop is connected, this occurs. I cannot access my account on my laptop, as it shuts down before I can access the login screen. The fan vent is clear and unobstructed.

@randomperson1

So it only happens when the charger is connected then?

Have you checked that the charger's output voltage is 19V DC?

When you are on battery only you can still check event viewer to see what if anything has happened as the events are stored. This is just to eliminate anything else

For this time, yes, it only happens when the charger is plugged in. Last time, this occured for both when it was plugged and and it wasn't. My charger's output is 19 V DC.

I'd still create a battery report (if you can get in) and check what it says about the state of the battery

Hi @randomperson1

When you connect the charger and do not try to start the laptop does the laptop indicate that the battery is charging?

If so try gently moving the charger's plug in the laptop’s charge port from side to side and up and down to see if the charging light turns on and off and if you can detect any movement in the port at all.

If so I’m wondering if it is a loose or faulty DC-In jack on the motherboard. If so this may be why the problem is happening. The battery perhaps cannot handle the load any more (possibly due to not being correctly charged over a period of time because of the jack problem) and when the charger is plugged in, if the jack moves for whatever reason, power would also be lost to the motherboard and it would shutdown.

This is only conjecture on my part. You would need to open the laptop and inspect the DC-In jack to see what its’ connection is like and maybe even have to prove electrical continuity through the jack with an Ohmmeter etc
