Tv sparked when plugged in

Hi I have a pretty old tv its a samsung LE32A456C2D Its worked great for 10 years until i decided to plug it in with a different cable. As soon as the cable went in a bright white light flashed from behind the tv and it made a loud noise. This also tripped the electricity in the house. I cant see any burn marks around the cable or the back of the tv I took the back off the tv and I saw a slight black mark on the powersupply im a complete noob to electronics so im not sure if this is normal or not. Is it safe to try to turn the tv back on with its original cable

Any help would be appreciated

Hi,

I don’t think that the TV will work anyway if you reconnect the old cable.

Can’t see it too well in the image your posted but the component that blew (between the blue MOV and link J840) is near the power switching mosfets QM801 & QM802

Why it blew is another problem.

It may be that one of the mosfets failed causing the other component to fail so spectacularly, but this is only a guess.

It is also strange that the main fuse near the power cord connection appears to be OK, although this needs to be proved with an Ohmmeter.

Since you state that you don’t have much experience with electronics the best option is to source a replacement power board. The power board schematic is available if you know someone who can fix it with the help of the circuit.

Check the number on the barcode sticker which is near the main fuse, near the power cord connection on the board and verify that part of it says BN44-00214A??? (can’t see much more but you may need the Rev. No. if it has one) then either search online for (insert BN number + Rev. No.) power board or you could just search for Samsung LE32A456C2D power board to find suppliers. If you try the 2nd way just make sure that the BN44 number is the same as your board or suitable for your exact model. The link is only to show what the part costs and also that it shows compatible TV models. There are other suppliers online that may suit you better.

Hi thanks for thr detailed answer when the power supply blew could it of shorted other components such as the mainboard and backlight.

Hi @ Dany,

Given that it blew on the the AC input side not the the DC output side probably not but this is not 100%.

As a DIY repair you can only try a replacement board and check what happens when you turn on the TV.

I bought a used power supply my psu was a rev 1.0 but this one is a rev 1.1 I thought they would be compatible but the red light now turns on but flashes when i try turning it on then goes back to a solid red light.

Hi @Dany

OK two possibilities then.

1. Another fault as well somewhere else.

2. Faulty replacement power board.

Try the following:

Turn off the TV if on. Disconnect the power from the TV.

Remove the back cover from the TV and then disconnect the cable between the power board and the mainboard.

Reconnect the power to the TV.

The TV screen backlights should turn on full and stay on. There will be no picture because the mainboard is disconnected.

If they stay on then most likely the power board is OK as the backlight power is OK and also the standby power is OK (red power light was on before). So the problem could be the mainboard.

You would need to test the voltages being supplied to the mainboard (where the mainboard cable connects to on the power board) to make sure that they are also OK and not just assume this to be the case of course ;-)

If the backlights don't turn on or flash on and off etc, then it is either the power board not being able to supply the power necessary for the backlights and therefore maybe not the mainboard either or there is a problem with the backlights themselves. More testing would be required to isolate the problem further.

Be safety aware when working in the back of the TV as there is exposed lethal voltage on the power board when the power is connected to the TV. Disconnect the power from the TV first before working in the back unless "live" testing with a voltmeter is required

Thanks for the reply theres 2 cables going from the mainboard to the power supply should i disconnect both. Also i was thinking that this power supply might not be compatible with my tv because the original one that came inside was a rev 1.0 but the replacement i bought is a rev 1.1
