Colored horizontal line on the center of the top screen?

Honestly I think I did something that resulted this issue, two things.

  1. I tried to fit my unit inside a pouch, to the point that it is totally cramped inside, no allowance for space.
  2. This might be dumb but I tried to put some toothpaste on a scratch, and I accidentally smudged some of it inside a narrow gap on the top screen, then I tried removing it using a tiny sheet of paper. It was successful, but it looked like the gap got wider a bit.

Then the next day as I opened up my unit, this surprised me. I'm not sure which among those two really caused the issue. Just a straight line across the center of the screen, it's not moving anywhere. I can see that it is changing colors depending on the graphic on the screen, with too much yellow/orange on it. It disappears sometimes without me doing anything, as in rarely, but goes back again.

Hi!

Not sure what caused it.. I don’t think option 1 caused it, could be the toothpaste action though. But could also be caused by something else, or it happened just out of nothing.

Anyway, you probably need to replace the upper LCD screen to get back to what it was. And if you are there, just clean everything again, and make sure all the toothpaste is gone for good.

Hello there!

Thanks for the info. I've just got a few more questions, if you please:

1. Is it easy to replace the top screen of this unit? Because I can't find any guide for this specific model, mostly for the XL version.

2. I've also posted a question on Reddit, others have mentioned it's just a loose ribbon cable. Just in case it really is just a loose cable, is it an easy fix?

3. Do you think doing something, aside from opening it up, might magically fix it? This idea might be dumb, but there's this one time where I was playing while laying on the bed sideways, the line disappeared throughout my play through, as in it's totally gone. Though unfortunately, it came back on the next day. So I was wondering if like not using the device at all, then tilting it in some specific angle for a few days or weeks, would fix the problem?

I'm honestly anxious to open my unit because I might end up totally bricking my device, since I've got no prior experience on tinkering any internals of a gadget.

1. I'm going to be honest with you, but no. The topscreen won't be easy. Just take all the time you need and do it carefully. I also can't find the guide, but I think it's similair to the XL (it's not the same offcourse). If I'll reveive an New 3DS, I'll create a guide for it. Guide for New 3DS XL: Nintendo 3DS XL 2015 Upper Screen Replacement

2. You can always check if the ribbon cable is seated properly and this is not difficult. You just need to remove the back cover and check the connector at the very right side (up, above the joystick).

3. Depends on what it is. Loose contact can cause something to work for some time. Something that is broken, most of the times stays broken.. And the line in the screen is most of the time referring to a broken lcd. But first things first, clean it all the way and check the ribbon cable if it's good or not. When you press on the LCD (down side or upper side) the line can go away magically, but at the end it's coming back...

Sorry comment was to long, so I need to post a second comment. What I wanted to add:

Yes, I know what you mean.. If you are not sure about the repair or still have doubts, you can also bring it in for repair to let it be repaired..
