Why can't I install High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina. Firmware issue.

I have a customer’s 2015 13” Macbook Air. It was brought me because it had shut off when they were trying to update the computer to Catalina. The computer was running Yosemite at the time. When I opened it up, the fan was turning on and off. I unplugged the battery, plugged it back in and it booted up just fine. I have tried every which way to update the OS to High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina, but I keep getting an error about the firmware not being able to update. I understand the firmware needs to update in order to support the new file system under the new OS versions. I have done clean installs to no avail. I even bought another nvme drive with nvme adapter and no luck. I’m starting to think something may be wrong with logic board. Any and all help is appreciated.

Hi @kyzer

I would suggest you to run diagnostic test first to check on the computer.

I has some macbook pro devices having such problems. Then I started with one-older release - (sorry not an answer but a comment) elcapitan or sierra.
