Laptop has no power and wont charge

I have a Lenovo Yoga 710-14IKB. It went dead and now doesn’t charge or power on. I think the battery might be drained. I disconnected the battery and tried a few troubleshooting things but the best I got was the power light to flash orange which I believe indicates that the battery is charging from a drained state. I have left it plugged in and tried different plugs etc but I get nothing. Is there a way to jump-start the battery? I would be happy to buy a replacement battery if I was sure that would fix it. I disconnected the battery and used the main power only all that worked was the fan at the bottom for about 5 seconds. That's the most I could get it to do. When I reconnected the battery and plugged the laptop back into the main power that's when the charging light flashed orange a few times. When I plug it in whether the battery is connected or not I get nothing. Is that normal? or should the laptop accept power from the mains if the battery is disconnected

It would have helped us to help you better if you told us what these things were, “… tried a few troubleshooting things…”. It saves us time. You may have done one of the steps incorrectly - none of us a re perfect.

Any how try the following and let us know how it goes.

To enter BIOS via function key

  1. Turn the PC off.
  2. Turn the PC on.
  3. The PC screen displays the Lenovo logo.

To enter BIOS via Novo button

  1. Shut down the computer. Find the Novo button.
  2. Press Novo button to enter Novo Boot Menu, select BIOS Setup to enter BIOS.

The Novo button is usually located on the side or near the power button of the machine. The button is either a small button or pinhole with a backwards arrow icon next to it that resembles an upside down U. To press the button, use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object with a sharp tip) and gently press the Novo button.

Thanks Mike. The problem I have is the laptop is 100% off and will not power on at all. When the laptop is plugged in the charging light does not come on either. I have disconnected the battery and plugged it into the main power and still nothing.

i’m having this issue too. i replaced battery after orange blinking light. Could not get it to power on, even when plugged in. now i don’t get any power, not even lights.

Did y’all solve this? Same problem here. It won’t come on at all (tried the novo button) and when I plug the power cord in, the power indicator light flashes orange one time for a full second or two and then nothing. I also tried a different charger and same result.

I think it is really terrible that we paid good money for these machines and we're all having this same problem. Why is Lenovo not fixing this or sending us buyers a recall card or a voucher to get it fixed - which I understand involves removing the charging ports and replacing them with new ones. And, as one technician told me, it might also include having to replace the whole motherboard. I want to write a letter to Lenovo about this, but am not sure where to send it. We are not happy.

Yes I will not buy another Lenovo laptop again. You get one USBC power port. That just wears out. Then it will not power on or charge. I have been able to power it up, if I charge the battery cells manually with an external lithium battery charger. HP at least provide a USBC power port but also a standard power round power port. So at least you don't end up with a dead laptop.

I have been going through the same thing, and I tried EVERYTHING. This is the 2nd Lenova Yoga, and 3rd lenovo laptop where this has happened. This is insane.

To answer one of your earlier questions.

Yes, laptops will work with battery removed and just the charger/power cord plugged in.

Have you tested the charger in another laptop? In troubleshooting you are always trying to eliminate possible causes.

Disconnected hard drive, removed Wifi card, take out the RAM and reinsert making sure it seats properly, what else??? This is to see if a bad component is shorting out the system

Did anything in particular happen before this problem first appeared?

Have you tried this yet?

  1. Unplug your charger cord.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press and hold the "Power" button for 30 seconds.
  4. Now plug back in the power/charger cord.
  5. Try turning it on now.
  6. If it works put the battery back in.

Hi Mike I did try that and got nothing. When I did connect the battery after trying that I plugged it into the power using the charge cord and the charge light flashed orange a few times, that’s pretty much the only sign of life I can get from it. I believe the flashing orange light means the battery is drained

I just edited the above.

Have you tried the other things?

I think what you’re suggesting might be out of my expertise but I guess I can give it a try. I have used different charges and tested them on other laptops and they work fine. I have also tried the below suggestion and got nothing. Which makes me hesitant to just buy a $80 replacement battery

Unplug your charger cord.

Remove the battery.

Press and hold the "Power" button for 30 seconds.

Now plug back in the power/charger cord.

Try turning it on now.

If it works put the battery back in.

@oconnor84 I should have said "disconnect" battery, not " remove", as you don't need to actually take it out.

I am having a very similar issue. It started with the laptop not wanting to turn on by pressing the power button once (with steady orange light) while connected to the charger. I held the power button for about 5-10 seconds and the button light (orange) extinguished, and since then I have not been able to turn on the laptop. I have disassembled the laptop all the way and tested the battery with another same laptop I have and the battery charges properly. I did found that it looks like the motherboard or what the repair manual calls it the system board is not getting any power as I tried the other laptop system board and it works with the broken laptop battery. I hope I don't have to replace the motherboard, because it has the CPU integrated (soldered) in it thus it may be cost prohibited to get a replacement of it. I am gonna try the Lenovo button underneath the laptop and see if that works somehow.

Thanks so much for your info. It is very frustrating, and all the more so because my Lenovo was not even 2 yrs. old. When I took it to Best Buy, which is where I bought it, it was clear the charger was not charging. We got that orange light on for only a few seconds. lt seems that where the charger connects to the laptop, the charger is just loose - in other words, it doesn't seem to stay in the connection strongly enough. Best Buy said they could send it back to the factory, but that would cost $200, on top of whatever they find wrong with it there. He also spoke of the possibility of having to replace the entire motherboard. We are not happy. However, I am thinking of sending it in so if repairing it is not too, too expensive, at least I could use it as a back-up computer in case my current Lenovo (which I bought to replace the one that won't charge!) dies. :(

I have this laptop for work and I have gone thru 3 of them in 6 months. It's the motherboard that keeps going out. Mine will work perfect and one day it won't be charging but working off of battery then poof. Other people working remote for our company using the same laptop have all had the same exact issues. That it just one day stops accepting power

Thanks so much for your response. It is really awful. I keep meaning to write to Lenovo about it - I think having to pay for new laptops so frequently should entitle us to some kind of refund, as it is the manufacturer who has made a faulty item, not our fault. What do you think? Thanks again.

Mine just did the same thing after 3 years of on and off use. I'm sure the motherboard shorted. When I plugged in the charger it the screen blinked like a shortage and the computer tried to fix itself before turning off forever. It's disheartening I invest over 800 dollars into a machine that doesn't last over 3 years. Maybe I should have stuck to cheap computers if this is the case.

I never did. I didn’t want to buy a new battery unless I knew it was 100% going to fix it. I ended up dropping it off to best buy to recycle it

same issue here. when I got home from work, the clock on my stove was flashing, which told me I had lost power at some point. ideapad Y410 is now running on battery alone and doesn't seem to recognize the charging adaptor whatsoever. I'm gonna borrow a friend's universal charger and see if that's the culprit. laptop still powers on and runs off battery, and I haven't made any recent hardware changes so I'm baffled
