Remove File Vault from user profile

As the question states, but…..

customer has a faulty HDD and it is been replaced with a new shiny SSD.

i cannot migrate the user data from all the accounts because 2 of them have file vault enabled. i was under the impression that FV encrypts the entire drive not individual user accounts.

when the migrate data window appears showing the user accounts to select, two of the users are marked as encrypted and cannot transfer the data.

can i disable FV from these accounts if i cannot load into them?

The only way I was able to get around a multiple user account setup was to boot up under the drive with the old drive still connected with the new drive (Option key on boot), and then logging in user that I need to salvage the data under, then using Migration Assistant moving the users data across. If you want to break the encryption you’ll need to access File Vault under that account to undo it.

hi there Dan, was waiting for your input :D /quote "to boot up under the drive with the old drive still connected with the new drive"

might be work stress but i have read that several times and still cant translate it. :D

cant login to the actual account that is encrypted with file vault, when i do so i get the error regarding fixing the home folder. have left it for over 24hours but it hasnt changed status.

Ouch!

Thats telling us the drive its self has issues that won't let us access to the account.

What is your exact model here?

OK what is the SSD you are using?

This series only offers a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive interface so the drive you use needs to be able to run at this slower I/O speed. Most SSD's today are fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) You'll need to find an older SATA II or an auto sense drive like a Samsung 860 EVO which will dial in to the systems I/O speed matching it. That could mess you up with migration or even cloning!

I think your only hope here is to try cloning the drive over But you will need to run Disk Utilities Disk First Aid on the drive first to make sure the HFS structure is in good shape.

Are you able to get the recovery keys from the customer to gain access to the volumes? Thats about it, sorry.

@danj we are using WD Green 480GB ssds on this occasion. its looking like the original drive has got worse and giving me less and less options. so i dont see a clone working, customer better have a back up :D

just for future reference, if the drive was working ok. how do you removed encryption from a single profile?

do you have to be logged in to the actual account you want to decrypt and just go to the file vault app in system preferences?

is there anyway to decrypt if you cant get in the user account?

we sell deslock full disk encryption and we can generate decryption files in situations like this, but i know very little about the ins and outs of file vault.

from my experience i haven’t been able to get past that. Even with the HDD being faulty its tough to get the data off regardless. File vault will even stop you from manually doing a data transfer through terminal outside of the os. Its a pain.
