Which battery replacement kit for my 2018 MacBook Pro (with touchbar)?

Dear ifixit community,

I have a Macbook Pro 13” Touch Bar 2018 model and noticed that I cannot close the lid of the Macbook anymore due to a slight swelling of the case. As this happened to me on an earlier macbook pro model, this looks the battery is swelling again and needs to be replaced.

Now I would like to replace the battery myself, as Apple is not willing to replace the battery free of charge and due to Corona situation all local Apple authorized merchants are closed.

Only trouble is, I cannot find a suitable battery replacement kit for the 2018 macbook pro 13” model. Can anyone point me in the right direction which battery replacement kit I should order?

Many thanks in advance,

Michael

Everyone, I wanted to report back that I was able to replace the battery on the Macbook Pro 13” (with touchbar) myself and using the ifixit guide for the 2017 MBP battery replacement works just fine.

So I paid $85 for the new replacement battery (bought on a different site) and $20 for the ifixit adhesive remover kit. So no need in my case to buy the MBP Upper Case assembly and I saved myself a lot of money. Everything on my MBP works perfect now.

If anyone is in a similar situation with a swollen battery on a 2018 Macbook Pro as myself they could use this way to fix it :)

iFixit is shipping but I don’t know if they can ship to your island.

The battery is included with the upper case assembly. They may also have the battery and it’s not listed but it costs nothing to ask.

Meanwhile, if that battery IS swelling it needs to come out before it could cause further damage. I have seen them crack the trackpad.

Many thanks, I have an US freight forwarding address that I use for my US orders, so that is not an issue.

Thanks for the link, I didn't know that the battery is part of the upper case assembly, which would make a replacement dramatically more expensive.

As my replacement battery and the ifixit toolkit is already on the way, I will attempt to replace the battery as the swelling and bulging of the macbook case is still very minimal and everything still seems to be working fine.

I think my plan is, once the new rumored 14" macbook will be released, i will then sell my repaired macbook to someone locally here.

Some authorized service shops are still open!

As this is such a new system I don't know of any source for the battery here in the states.

The only source I can find is in China: New Genuine laptop battery A1964, 020-02497 for 13" Apple MacBook Pro 2018, (A1989), 5086 mAh

Unfortunately I live on a Caribbean island and our options are very limited... Calling Apple directly has not yielded any success, as they told me I have to get in touch with my local authorized shop (which is closed due to corona) or I could fly to the US and get my MacBook repaired there (which is not possible as there are no more flights due to corona)... This is really laughable!

Since I don’t want to wait for this corona crisis to pass and see my MacBook get worst each day, I am thinking to get a replacement battery from another site and get me the ifixit tool kit and use the instructions for the 2017 MacBook Pro in the mean time.

@braintumor - Ouch! Thats good and bad! Good if you haven't have anyone with the virus on the island as you can ride it out. The bad is you are very stranded!

Did Apple give you a case number? Hang onto that! You'll need that later.

As to using your system in its current state, I think you really shouldn't!

The problem is likely more than the battery alone! You likely have a logic board issue as well. The circuitry which controls the charging is within it. It's what over charged the battery causing it to swell.

Do you have any family or a friend in the states that you can send your system to who can then get it to an authorized servicer that's open still? Don't wait too long as they could close up on you.

The other option is to buy another system directly from Apple, they offer a generous return policy. That could buy you some time to get yours fixed.

In any case make sure you have a good backup as Apple will likely wipe the drive.
