Why is my gameboy not turning on?

I have replaced my gameboy with new batteries after seeing there was a red light showing with the old ones. Once I did this the gameboy is now not turning on at all. I also have got a Gamester power pack and my gameboy won't charge on that. When I plug the gamester into the socket the green light is on but the red light isn't coming on. Can someone please help me ?
