Vizio P75-F1 TV shows logo then goes black. Repair help?

I have a Vizio P75-F1 with the infamous black screen of death.

The TV powers up, shows the Vizio logo like normal. Then the picture goes black, but the backlight remains on.

When doing a factory reset, (Hold Vol Down + Input for 10 sec, release Vol Down and continue to hold Input). The TV will reboot multiple times, but nothing changes.

This has happened a few times since I got the TV, but always managed to snap out of it relatively quickly until now.

Been at this several weeks now. On my 3rd replacement Main Board.

First one showed the Vizio logo, then went black, but unlike the original, the backlight turned off.

Second was totally dead. Couldn't even get the logo to display.

Third board acted exactly like the original board. (Vizio logo, goes black, backlight stays on.)

Two replacement Power boards don't seem to have any effect.

A replacement T-Con board didn't seem to have any effect either.

I have not replaced the LED driver board, as the Flashlight test reveals nothing. And I know the panel is good, as the Vizio logo is displayed normally when the TV first boots. And yes, I did mix and match several of those boards before sending them back.

Do you have anything you can suggest? I have a multimeter, but I admit I'm not very familiar with checking voltages. Things like knowing what setting I should set the multimeter to, and what spots to check would be great to know. Pictures would be a bonus.

EDIT: I ended up buying a whole new set of boards (Power board, T-Con, LED Driver, and Main board) on ShopJimmy with zero luck. Same thing. Again, when it powers up, the logo comes up fine. Backlight too. So I'm sure the panel is fine. But I've literally replaced everything else, and I have NO IDEA what else it could be. There's no way I got that many dud boards. Please help!

EDIT 2: Tried reinstalling the firmware, but it never seems to get the point that it's reading the data off the USB drive.

Same issue here - although I’ve only replaced the power board. I’m debating whether to replace the Main Board. If it might not work, I don’t want to waste the $$.

Did you ever resolve this?

@hybrid_divide this is an interesting failure. One thing to consider is that just because the backlight comes on does not mean the panel is ok. Since you now changed all the boards the error could be originating from a failed LCD driver board. After all it is those boards that actually draws the pictures after having received the instructions and directions from the main and t-con board. Check those boards and consider posting some pictures of those boards with your question

Thank you for your reply. The reason I said the panel was ok was because it was showing the Vizio logo perfectly when it started up. No lines or distortion at all.

If there's a 5th board in this thing, I don't see it. But I've replaced the main, power, LED driver, and T-Con board.

And when I do a factory reset, it restarts multiple times, like there's some hitch in the boot process. This has happened twice before. The first time it snapped out of it pretty quickly, and didn't do it for about 9 months. Then it happened, and snapped out of it after a few days, now it won't snap out of it.

I'll try to post pictures soon, but here's the kit that I bought from ShopJimmy.

It came with the full set of cables, too. So I'm going to swap those in and see if they make a difference. Thanks again, and please let me know if you think of anything else!

@hybrid_divide what are you using for your input source? Have you removed/change the input source. Try just a local input like a DVD/BR/ Game console and nothing else.

@oldturkey03 I'm not using any input source right now. All inputs have been removed. I used the button combination (Hold Vol Down and Input buttons for 10 seconds, then release Vol Down, and continue to hold Input for about 10 more seconds). The reset code DOES work, but it will just bootloop for awhile, before going back to just a black screen. It's supposed to show the setup screen, like you just hooked up the TV for the first time. Doing that reset button combo and letting it bootloop worked previously to get the TV to snap out of it, but this time I wasn't so lucky.

At any rate, wouldn't the Vizio logo showing up correctly at startup signify that the panel/LCD driver board is ok? (I did find the LCD driver boards, but it looks like their ribbon cables are permanently attached to the panel. Which may mean I'm screwed.) I'll find out for sure soon.

@hybrid_divide sorry about the back and forth. I am at a place right now where I do not have access to my manuals. Does your TV have a separate network/bluetooth board? Any change if you do connect a locsl source for a video input source?

Yes the ribbon cables from the LCD driver boards are bonded to the LCD and thus really not fixable by us DIY’ers

@oldturkey03 I tried connecting a local source at one time, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

Oddly enough, I just remembered something. When it first went to black screen this last time, I still had sound until I did the factory reset. But even then, the flashlight test did nothing.

The network hardware is on the main board, and I'm going to assume that's where the bluetooth chip is as well. Even so, I never used the network functions so I could avoid Vizio's automatic updates. And I never used their bluetooth functionality either. (The remote used IR)

Does the fact that the logo comes up just fine, and that I went over 6 months between incidents give you any insight into whether panel is ok?

I have the same issue. Everytime I turn the TV on it shows Vizio like normal across the screen then goes black. Then you can only see the picture if you shine a light on the screen. The sound works also. How is the vizio showing right on the screen then goes black. I would think if the backlight is out then vizio wouldn't be able to show normally on the screen when turned on. Can someone explain this.

@mikeandcorey That is because the backlight strips turn off after a few second due to broken LED's on the strips. That is a very common and normal behaviour for Vizio and for backlight strips. They are getting power, getting to hot and turning off [simplified]
