Fan runs constantly in Windows 10 virtual machine

Hello,

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 13”. I followed your advice several years ago and swapped the HDD for a SSD and also upgraded the RAM to 16 GB. I also followed your advice and moved the old HDD to the CD drive spot so I could use the extra storage space. All of this worked made the machine hum. I run a virtual machine using Fusion and the VM started as Windows 7. The virtual machine also worked great.

A couple of years ago I upgraded the VM to Windows 10. Ever since doing this the fan on the Mac runs constantly whenever the VM is on (this doesn’t happen when only the Mac part is used). I read several blogs on line and noticed many people pointing out the Windows Update could be causing this. I find if I close out the process of Windows update after a few minutes this helps. However, often when running just a few applications the fan still runs constantly when using the VM with Windows 10.

I have most of the RAM allocated to the Mac (usually 12 GB and allocate the other 4 GB to the virtual machine) so I don’t believe RAM is an issue.

Do you have any recommendations for how to resolve the power usage or constant fan running when using the Windows 10 VM?

Thanks so much,

Jason

Did you update the BootCamp when you did the Windows 7 to Windows 10 update. Apple did update the Windows drivers within BootCamp.

Sadly, you may need to strip the drive down and rebuild things to get this worked out. We had issues with Windows 10 when we had upgraded years ago. Rebuilding ended up being the easiest way for us. In a years time of that we ended up trashing all of the MacBook Pro’s moving the HP desktop & laptops (400 plus systems).
