None of the Mac systems offer a M.2 blade drive slot! Apple did their own thing! Apple uses a custom connector for their custom SSD’s.

So what I can tell you is your 27” iMac does have this custom connector! But it may not be available to use! If you bought a Fusion Drive you have in fact two drives installed a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5” HDD and a small blade SSD held in the custom PCIe slot which is used for caching, hence the two drives together are fused into being seen as one drive within your OS’s file system!

But, lets say you only have a HDD in your system then you have a free PCIe blade drive slot! Here’s more details on the Apple SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

While not the exact same as your system, the process to put in a new blade SSD is the same as here 27英寸 5K Retina 显示屏 iMac 固态硬盘SSD 更换

I’d strongly recommend you stick with an Apple SSD or with either of the two SSD’s that are designed to work in your system (OWC or Transcend).

I really don’t recommend force fitting M.2 SSD’s into your system. I’ve got a very full drawer with the remains I’ve had to pull out, as they will fail much sooner.

Yes, that ... I knew already that its not a pin compatible m2 pciex but with an adapter it IS. The question was: On The iMac with HD there IS a slot for (apples m2 pciex) ssd - if it is so then - nice I can upgrade :)

What does your system have now? Just a HDD or does it have a Fusion Drive?

I wasn't kidding! These M.2 adapter frames and M.2 drives don't work well in Mac systems!

To put it into perspective opioids have a medical use to reduce pain tricking the brain but that are addictive! Oxycontin was claimed to be safe but as we now know more that 50% of the opioid addiction was caused by doctors with good intensions help their patients over come pain. Now look where we are!

Thes adapters are in the same vain! People think they are harmless! But over time we have learned they just don't hold up as long as the real units and what a properly designed unit does.

I know, the cost is holding you back! In the long haul it will cost you more than doing it right from the start!

@danj you compare opioids with an adapter that just provides the proper connections from an proprietary Apple standard to industry standard M2Pciex ... I don't go further.explaning what i think about those very poor comparison.

@Ulf Dederichs - To set things straight I LOVE M.2 SSD's! I would LOVE for Apple to embrace them!

But that's the rub! They didn't. The adapters are not fully compliant to what Apple is doing so when you get something thats only 90% operative you get into th question of that last 10%. Thats the part that bites you.

People put in these GREAT SSD's into a system which is NOT designed to run them! So while the issue is squarely Apples failure to use an established standard we are stuck on what they did not the M.2 standard!

The point of the analogy is our wishing something is going to work 100% when it doesn't. Here Oxycontin was sold as a non-addictive opioid which is far from the truth! Like these adapters!
