My Cpu Temeratures is kinda trolling going from 90 degree to 60 when I

So, I have a gaming pc that I built 4 years ago, i7 4790, MSI gtx 970, 8 Gb RAM ,and I tried to kept it as clean as possible, I was playing with it all the time without any problem and it never get ovet 70 to 75 degree celcius at heavy load , until last week, I was playing the game blair witch, and it is not a super demanding game, and I noticied that the cpu is at 100 degree on 4 cores, so I tried to fix this essue by replacing the thermal paste and re-seating the heatsink properly, but sadly, nothing has changed, my cpu reached 100 degree is just 2 minutes and kept working without any noticeable problem and games still smooth, no lag , no fps drops nothing . I almost did everything possible in my hands , cleaned my case, reapplying the thermal past 3 times, arranged my cables to give more space, but nothing was helpful, but found out that when I remove the side of my case the heat is decreased dramatically from 90s to like 50s or 60s at most, at stayed there for more than 3 hours of gaming and I tried to play some heavy games like gears 5 and assassin's creed odyssey, it never get above 69 degree. but the moment I put the side of the case back, it start worming up quickly and reached 90 degree, that's so weird and I don't know what is happening exactly. there is two things I did before this start happening, I first changed my PSU from 450w to 550w, and I updated my bios to the latest available wich is from 2016 for my motherbord.

please if someone has the smallest clue of what what is going on in my rig, please help I'm totally out of ideas :/

Hi,

You made no mention of either the CPU fan or the case fan, are they both clean and working OK? Also the case vents are they clean?

What are the fan RPM showing in BIOS?

@jayeff

thank you for your quik responde, the CPU fan is working properly and I cleaned it and to be sure I even got it replacid with a working and new one from a friend, also I never had a case fan in my rig and for the bios fan RPM, I will check it out this night because I'm at work right now, and I'll keep you informed as soon as get back home

Hi,

Also open Task Manager (right click on Taskbar > task manager) and select Processes and check which processes are using the highest CPU % , Memory % etc. when the temp is high and check if they are really necessary.

@jayeff

the only process using highest CPU is the game running, and it never so hight, for assassin's creed odyssey it was aroud 60% to 70%

Hi,

Sorry to bother you again ;-),

Is the fan working in the new PSU if it has one?

Just wondering if the heat given off by the PSU when it is supplying heavy load is not being vented properly and is being passed into the case.

What CPU cooler is installed for that processor? Is it the intel stock one that came with it or is it a different CPU cooler like an AIO Liquid cooler or a non-intel branded heatsink cooler?

Might want to take photos of the case with and without side panels installed. Sounds like not enough air is coming in and out to exhaust the heat out of the case.

it's a MASTERAIR G200P I got it from a friend for testing

So the problem with that CPU cooler is that it needs cool air to suck in easily because of the small heatsink design which doesn't dissipate heat well in restricted air flow environments.

The solution is to get a larger CPU Cooler like the CoolerMaster Hyper Evo 212 equivalent or better if it fits in the case.

Another solution is to add case fans to blow air in and out of the case if possible.
