Camera constantly restarts, and is also stuck on auto mode

Hello, my Fujifilm finepix hs10 has two problems: 1) it constantly restarts at random, which is very annoying, and 2) a new development (yay) is that it is now stuck on 'auto' regardless of what the dial is turned to. I've replaced the batteries with fresh AA batteries, bought and formatted properly a new sd card, and even reset the camera, to no avail. My only option that I can think of would be to upgrade the firmware, (currently it is running on 1.03) but I'm afraid of what would happen if it randomly decided to restart halfway through…the warrenty has long since expired. I don't have a large budget to burn on having a repair shop fix this, but with enough research and time I'd happily repair it myself if I could just figure out what was actually wrong. Any ideas?
