Won't accept charge, or battery drains quickly

I have tested the charging cable, which is not the problem, and fully taken apart the laptop, as well as tested the battery itself. both of those are not the issue, and I had the laptop working fine for 2 years before it started this. It does not accept a charge, and when it does, it may only charge to 50 or 75% then die out again, or not recognize that it is plugged in at all, and refuse to accept a charge entirely, as well as not even powering on even when plugged in. I was curious if it may be something to do with the motherboard, or the power port possibly being broken. As stated, I have tested the battery and charging cable and neither of those are the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

By charging cable do you mean the DC-In cable in the laptop or the cable coming from the laptop’s charger?

The DC-In cable is in the laptop and it is the cable that has the DC-In jack at one end and connects to the motherboard at the other end.

If you did mean this cable then apologies for wasting your time.

If not then have you proved that the DC-In jack is OK by using an Ohmmeter to prove continuity between the DC-In jack +ve pin and -ve sleeve connectors and the appropriate wires at the other end of the cable? It is not uncommon for the DC-In jack to fail internally creating an open circuit, especially on the +ve leg. Disconnect the cable from the motherboard when you go to test it from the DC-In jack through to the cable’s end plug connector

Although you probably don’t need this here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop. Scroll to p.46 to view the pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the DC-In cable.

If the DC-In jack is faulty here’s the part number - 5C10N00259.

If you search online using the part number only in the search term of your browser, you’ll get results for suppliers of the part.

i have not checked the dc in cable actually, the external charger that plugs into the wall is definitely not the problem. it would be nice if it was the dc in cable though. I don't have access to a ohmmeter on hand, but I have a friend who may have one.

One of the safety mechanisims might have been tripped. I recommend to check into the software. Good Luck, Apple Maniac
