How to fix battery issue on MBP 13" (2nd battery of 2019)

Hello!

My 2010 13” MacBook Pro is advising to replace battery. It’s on its second iFixit-supplied battery this year.

According to the System Report, the battery is fully charged (slightly overcharged, according to CoconutBattery screenshot). However, disconnecting MagSafe while system is powered on, it shuts down abruptly. Further, with MagSafe disconnected, system will not power up. I’ve reconnected battery, reset SMC, charged overnight (approx. 12hrs): Nothing’s working. For what it’s worth, the battery does look a bit swollen.

I discovered the issue about three days ago. Battery seemed fine less than a month ago.

Should I give another battery a chance? Could this be the result of improperly calibrated battery? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My MacBook Pro is closing in on a decade, perhaps it’s time to move on?

I’m suspecting your MagSafe charger is the root issue here. There was a run of cheap fake chargers which came onto the market quite a few years ago which can damage your system Lacking safety features, cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks & OEM MagSafe Chargers vs Cheap Imposters: Teardown for Truth

Simply put: What happens here is these chargers often damage the internal charging logic within your system. There are a set of MOSFET switches which control the flow of power in your case one of the four is shorted so the charger is always in charge mode never on run mode and its mate is open so power from the battery won’t go into your system. The micro controller within the battery is telling us the battery is charged and still has lots of life left. But the systems voltage/current sensors on the logic board is telling us the battery is not delivering the power the system requires! Which is why you have this information conflict!

Changing the battery won’t alter things as you’ll need to get the logic board fixed and you still need to find a REAL Apple MagSafe charger.

Getting a new system is not a bad thing if you are finding your system is sluggish or your RAM or storage needs need upgrading too. Now the rub! I would recommend getting a used 2015 13” MacBook Pro if you need something now. It also offers the most port compatibility with your current peripherals.

If you want something new I would wait, Apple is likely to release a new 14” MacBook Pro replacing the current 13” MacBook Pro’s. It’s expected this new system will have the older and better! Scissor keyboard design as the Butterfly design was a failure! Your current keyboard is a scissor design.

Do keep in mind you’ll need a hub device to hookup your older peripherals as the 2016 onward systems use USB-C which is a radical change.

Thank you for the response, Dan. I’m leaning to replace this MBP with the one you’ve recommended.
