Will Surface 4 Pro output to Mini-DP if it doesn't boot?

I recently received a broken surface pro 4. The previous owner had removed the screen (not gently) in order to take out their ssd. It has a few hairline cracks on the actual lcd screen in the top corner. When removing the screen they simply cut the ribbon cables instead of unplugging them. After ordering and placing in the new cables as well as a fresh and blank ssd, the laptop will turn on but will not display anything on the screen. Does anybody know if there is a way to have the laptop output to the mini display port without it fully booting since I am unable to install windows? Or is there a way to test my screen to know that it is what broke? I just don’t want to order a $160 part for it to not be the actual problem.

Yes. My SP4 is not showing anything on the main display. I currently connect a mini display port to a projector. Now I am trying to figure out what is broken on the motherboard causing nothing to display on the main SP4 screen.

yes you should be able to boot the laptop using the external screen, and here is how you get to the bios to install windows.

  1. Make sure the Surface Pro device is turned off.
  2. Hold the volume-up button.
  3. Press and release the power button.
  4. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-up button.
  5. The Surface UEFI firmware interface screen will be displayed and you can make changes.

Unfortunately my monitor displays no signal... Does this mean something on the motherboard is broken, and not the laptop screen?

@Joseph Vinyard

1. unplug your screen cables from the motherboard

2. plug your external monitor in

3. power on the laptop

it should boot to the external screen because there is nothing else for it to boot to

What happened? That worked?
