800MHz iBook G3 Is a Very Restless Sleeper!

Hello iFixit. Normally, I can figure stuff like this out, but this is just the strangest thing I've ever experienced, and I don't know how to fix it.

I have an iBook G3 (800MHz) that after replacing the upper case, won't make up its mind about sleeping. If you close the screen, it will go to sleep, but if you touch the screen or move the computer, it wakes up instantly! Then, if you open the screen to let it wake up, it falls into an endless loop of sleeping and waking, sleeping and waking.

I don't know what to do about this. . . . I've checked, double-checked, and triple-checked the sleep magnet in the trackpad case and nothing seems wrong with it. :/

The iBook used to work fine before I replaced the upper case piece to get rid of a couple cracks. Now, it just can't make up its mind about sleeping.

I guess it should be noted that it will sleep perfectly fine if you tell it to sleep. But anything relating to the sleep magnet makes it go haywire! I don't know if it's the magnet sensor in the display or if it's the new trackpad.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyone ever experienced something like this before?

Thanks for looking! I hope someone can help. . . . I'm kinda at a loss with this one for now.

I think your problem could be related to the reed switch board that triggers the sleep function when it enter in contact with the magnet. The reed switch board and cable is integrated to the inverter cable on the ibook G3 models. You could try to replace this cable since it's a cheap part available on ebay:

I haven't accepted your answer yet because I'm still waiting for the part in the mail. lol If it does the trick and fixes my problem, then I'll have you to thank for it and I'll naturally accept your answer. :) Just letting you know that I haven't abandoned my post irresponsibly.

Oh my gosh you guys! LONG ago, I replaced the reed switch in the iBook, and it did not solve my problem!

But today! I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!! :)

It turns out that it was the keyboard! I replaced my old keyboard for a new one because I was trying to get rid of the common smelly iBook problem, and it turns out that that new keyboard was causing the iBook to have weird issues! Can you believe it!?

So, I reinstalled my old keyboard and surely enough, it's working again.

I was able to figure it out by removing the sleep magnet completely. I thought, I might as well remove its sleeping-by-closing function to just stop the restlessness altogether, but when I closed the lid, it STILL woke up!!! So, I was able to deduce that it had to be something else magnetizing the reed switch. CRAZY!

It was the keyboard. There's nothing more to it! Thank you so much for all of your advice and help. I appreciate it more than words can say. :)
