MacBook Pro 2011 13" running slow

I do not want to buy a new MacBook pro that is not fixable/upgradeable I have a MacBook Pro 2011 (early)2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB I have replaced RAM (16gb) , Battery (3 times), Hard drive (2 hard drives) and Fan. i have gone through 3 batteries, and they all seem to die within an hour of two of just basic internet surfing.

my trackpad just quit working for being able to use the bottom right corner click for more info/options so now i double tap

MY MACBOOK is running AGONIZINGLY SLOW. It runs hot - i used to do a lot of digital scrapbooking with Photoshop - I am now using an equally power hungry software to design material for cutting - (Silhouette studio)

Can anyone recommend what MacBook pro i could upgrade too ? and is it worth having Catalina ?! ( i am an exclusive mac/ios user) but getting frustrated with Apple and it’s behind innovations and costing more for less (especially in storage - EVERYONE TAKES pictures ! how can you use a MacBook pro with only 128gb ?!?!? My iPad has that much storage - !!!)

anyway- really appreciate advice for looking for refurbished MacBook pro - and apparently - 2015 and 16 are just as useless as 2019 for any type of fixability or upgradability

thank you again

The 2011 MacBook Pros were notorious for overheating issues, there’s no getting around that. Even a 2012 Unibody would be a significant upgrade for you, and you’d get Catalina along with the older design with the upgradable hard drives and all that fun stuff.

But anyhow, back to this one real quick. Have you tried replacing the hard drive cable? The 2011 hard drive cables were total garbage. The 2012 cables were more robust, and they will fit in a 2011, so I’d just try one of those. MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. I just had a 2011 here that was agonizingly slow with 16GB RAM and a Samsung 860 Evo SSD. Cable fixed it.

If you’re set on a new laptop, I’d go with the Mid 2012 model like I was saying. Jumping from 2011 to 2012 doesn’t really sound like a big jump, but they were significantly better. You will need to purchase one with an SSD or install an SSD yourself, however. Any of the newer operating systems are basically unusable on spinning drives.

Anything Late 2012 to Present are pretty much useless in terms of repairability, but if you must get something newer, there typically aren’t issues with the 2013-2014 Retina MacBook Pros. At least you can still swap out the drive or remove it without losing data if the rest of the machine dies.

Also I get what you mean when you're talking about less storage in the newer models, but honestly it makes sense to me. The increased storage speeds of NVMe SSDs will honestly make a huge difference for most people, more than extra space. I see all sorts of people with 1TB spinning drives they barely utilize, and they walk away much happier with a 240GB SSD. The extra speed is 100% worth the cost IMHO. Soldering it on like the 2016 and later however, that's pure nonsense.

I have over 750gb used on my actual hard drive. I used to Velcro an external drive to the cover of my laptop. Speed maybe great, but it seems apple has quit making quality - and using glue for everything - idk, for the price - i want something i don’t have to replace in a couple of years - i have never had a windows computer last me 9 years that is even remotely useable. Speed and heat are my biggest issues with my 9 yr Mac book - i feel old saying, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”

Are you sure the cable you listed will work in the late 2011 MacBook Pro? The comment below this one says it doesn't.

Jonah,

I just received the cable you recommended, for the 2012 model. The lego-style connector on it is in a different orientation by 90 degrees, so it cannot be used on the 2011 machine! I would try it, to see if it resolves the slowness, but the lego connectors can be plugged in two orientations, so I won’t risk that.
