HELP! iPhone 7 could not be restored

Hi,

My Iphone 7 got stuck in a boot loop about 3 weeks ago. There was an attempt to update to IOS 13.1.3 overnight and the update failed. The Iphone was never dropped or had water damage. After that my Iphone was stuck on the Apple logo screen. I have tried restoring using iTunes multiple times in DFU mode. The restore process will get to “Verifying restore with Apple” and stuck there forever (longest I waited was 5 hours). The iPhone will show the Apple Logo and a progress bar at this point, but the progress bar never budge. After killing it and checking the restore log from iTunes, the last line I saw before getting error 9 (for disconnecting) was always “operation 29 progress -1”. See screenshot below for excerpt from iTunes update log.

I have also tried flashing using 3uTools and the process is stuck at 20% - Unmounting filesystems step. Is this an indication of a hardware issue? If so, is it the Logic Board?

I brought my phone into Apple Store and they didn’t bother fixing it. They told me I should take it elsewhere to see if someone is willing to fix. I need to get it to turn on at least, to be able to trade it in.

Any help/expertise is greatly appreciate.

The only thing you could try is changing the NAND flash memory chip. 20% on 3utools is the same thing that happens if you have no NAND at all.

Thank you for taking the time and answering my question Jessa! And thank you for your suggestion. Do you know how much changing the NAND flash memory chip typically costs? I certainly don't have the expertise to do it myself, and would like to avoid paying too much.

Error 9 can be caused by a lot of things. Jessa has a video on it that you might want to watch.

Thank you for the reply Chris! I've been looking for how to read the logs online and glad you shared that with me. I have encountered error 9 only after I manually killed the restore process (typically after waiting an insane amount of time) so I am pretty sure it is because of that. I will check out the video Jessa created. Thanks again!

I have had the same problem with my iPhone 7 when I tried to update it to iOS 13.1. Just curious if you have made any progress? It seems that there this is a common issue after that update.

Hi Cornelia! Glad to hear I am not alone. No, I have been getting price quotes to replace the NAND chip. I am getting $150-$200 and there's no guarantee. I am still weighing my options.

The problem is not with that specific update, but in general with updating (or rebooting) when there's an hidden problem that the update brings to the surface.

Not sure if this will help at all but you could check out the YouTube channel iPad rehab. I've been going through some of the videos to see if the answer is in ther or at least see if I could replace the NAND myself for less since there is no garauntee. It seems a little crazy that, what seemed to be, a perfectly functioning iPhone would get stuck after an update and become unusable.

Unless you are skilled in Micro soldering, you will destroy your phone

To my experience, error 9 is always NAND-error and that would be my best guess. I’ve yet to come across a case where it wasn’t that - iPhone 7 is especially tricky to do board-repairs on, to my experience. You have to be super precise with your heat and take care not to melt any tin on other surrounding components or move them.. - location of NAND is very close to BigAudioIC and PMU+PMIC - one defective soldering and the phone continues to be dead :)
