Refrigerator making flickering noise?

Hi,

I have recently started noticing flickering noise from my refrigerator. It's a 2 door refrigerator , GE 24.9 Cu. Ft. Capacity Side-By-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser.

Now the cooling in the refrigerator and regular compartment seems to be fine. I tried restarting the fridge from MCB and it is still making noise.

Opened the back panel and realized it is coming from the circuit area. Wearing rubber gloves I touched a point or two and could feel the vibration and was able to narrow down the source of sound in that area. But am clueless from there.

Here is a pic of back panel along with noise.

If it's coming from the left hand side along where the yellow topped transformer is located, be very careful while exploring that area as that looks like it's the switching power supply circuitry which can give one a very nasty jolt or two even when the unit is unplugged (supply filter capacitors still retain high voltage on them. Safety practices require them to be discharge before hands on handling)

Probably, unless it's a mechanical problem due to say loose screws/bolts etc, and as you say you are clueless about working on such circuitry, probably the best recommendation is to seek professional repair services.

The relay on your control board is dropping out. It wither failing, unable to hold the voltage. Or, the voltage to the relay is dropping out, meaning another component that supplies voltage to this relay is failing. If the compressor feels really hot to touch, it could be the relay to the compressor and this “on and off” voltage at the compressor could damage it.

To properly troubleshoot and diagnose this issue, id recommend scheduling a qualified technician to come and check it. The parts are expensive and without being at the unit with my test equipment, I would only be guessing. The inverter boards can generate over 250v even though it’s plugged into to a 110v outlet. UNPLUG IT BEFORE DOING ANYTHING. You can easily remove the board and look for burnt spots or swollen capacitors. Look for a board by the compressor. Inspect it too. Any signs of a burnt spot means it must be replaced or repaired. That’s the best I can do for not being in front o it.

it has stopped cooling since 36hours +. I have moved stuff to friend's fridge, mini fridge. Guess this being a 10 year old fridge, spending 100-200$ on repair may not be a good idea ?

Hi @vjsfbay ,

What is the model number of the fridge?

Is sounds like a relay clicking on and off at intervals

There are relays mounted on the pcb (black rectangular components with lots of writing on them) one of which may be operating and not holding .

Place your finger on each one and check if you can feel if it keeps operating and releasing on one particular relay.

Hopefully it is possible to find a schematic so it is known what the relay does.

Hi @vjsfbay ,

Have you checked that everything is working OK e.g. the ice dispenser, auto defrost etc?

Here's just one link to the parts for the fridge.

Unfortunately it is like all the rest I've searched for there is no mention of a service manual or a schematic diagram.

Without the circuit diagram it would be very difficult to find out what causes the relay to operate in this way (once you know which one it is).

You may have better luck finding a manual.

There may be some service manual suppliers online, where you have to pay for the manual, but I haven't found one yet.

Perhaps @ladytech may be able to help.
