last week i spent some time at a hot tub and used my phone for a few minutes while i was in it. i never dropped my phone in the water or got it wet. now the right side of my screen is unresponsive, the i, k, and m keys don’t work and if i touch that side of the screen nothing happens. could i have gotten water damage just from my phone being around the steam???

Find out if liquid damaged your iPhone or iPod
iPhone and most iPod devices are equipped with Liquid Contact Indicators (LCIs) that you can see from the outside.
An LCI will activate when it contacts water or a liquid containing water. The indicator's color is normally white or silver, but when it contacts water or a liquid containing water, it will turn fully red. An LCI won't activate because of humidity and temperature changes that are within the product's environmental requirements.
To find out if the LCI in your device contacted liquid, find your product in the table below and locate the LCI or LCIs in your device. To help you see the LCI, use a lighted magnifying glass and angle the light or the device until you can see the LCI.

Partial touch on iPhone X and XS is always the screen itself. There are different versions of OEM touch ics on these screens and some of them are not compatible with each other. If the problem started after a software update, then this is likely why. Aftermarket XS screens will not have this problem.

I have the same issue. Three months ago after updating my device to ios 15 I noticed the right side (edge) wasn’t responding to touches which affected “P and M” and other stuff aligned in that postion of the screen. I was surprised cos it started suddenly, my iphone xs didn’t fall or got submerged in water even with the water resistant i still won’t try it. And just few hours ago. It increased… other parts that responded to touches to stopped again… making it larger. I literally cannot use my phone for any wtf is this? Right not i find it hard to send messages on apps like instagram, snapchat and WhatsApp cos the send icon won’t respond.

I had the same problem, and so did another XS owner I know who did the ios 15 update at the same time. My phone is in a rugged waterproof case and there was no known damage or water contact apart from cleaning according to Apple instructions (lens cloth dampened with water). I've been using dictation for words with P or rotating the phone so the keyboard isn't in the deadzone. Not keen on buying a new iphone when this one didn't last long. At the Apple Store they shrugged when asked if 2-3 years was a normal lifespan for a phone now.
