Why is my iPod classic directing me to Apple's support page?
My iPod Classic (8GB) is not working and displays a message directing me to www.apple.com/support/iPod. Does anyone know why this would happen?
Most likely it is a bad hard drive-- You can try to restore it on iTunes etc, but probably you will end up having to replace the hard drive.
Red X and the support website indicate that the unit has a bad hard drive. In order to tell if your hard drive is bad you can go to diagnostic mode. To do that press and hold the center button and the menu button for about 5 the ipod will reboot and then press the back and center button to enter diagnostic mode. Press menu and find SMRT DAT . When you are in the SMRT DAT menu you will see Retracts, Reallocs and Pending. The number of Reallocs and Pending should be Zero. If it is not zero you have a bad hard drive also on the Retracts typically any number is find if it is over 250 i would just make sure that the HDD still sounds good while spinning. Also if is comes up blank it either need a new HDD cable or reconnection. If it says not supported it is most likely a bad HDD.
i had a 30 gig, and the docking was bad i bought a 20 gig both were 4th gen put the 30 gig in the 20 gig ipod, and well here i am lol do i have to change,, or update the firm ware or what ??
