MacBook keeps restarting, battery says "replace now"

I recently replaced my macbook's keyboard and before doing so my battery worked fine. But today, the day after replacing the keyboard, it keeps restarting and the info for my battery in the task bar says “replace now". It won't start up without the MagSafe adapter plugged in.

Sometimes it will stay on longer than other times. Right now, it's on and has been on for about 15 mintues, but that's because i haven't touched it, i'm not using it. The weird thing is, when i try to use an application, that's when it'll suddenly restsart.

I've tried an SMC and PRAM reset and neither of them fixed the problem. I don't know what happened when i had my macbook open, but i'm wondering if i maybe shorted something on the logic board.

It seems obvious that this is a battery problem, but the only reason i've made this post is because the macbook seems to stay on when idle. Also, i tired disconnecting the battery from the logic board and ran the macbook from the mains and it STILL restarts. So maybe it isn't a battery problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re-using a glued in battery is always iffy!

It does sound like you had a deeper issue here. What was the reason you replaced the keyboard? Did you have a liquid spill? If you did your logic board likely got wet and needs a full cleaning.

Thanks for a speedy reply!

I didn't remove the battery when replacing the keyboard. It's untouched.

I'm not really sure why my keyboard stopped working but i have a feeling it was some sort of liquid damage from condensation. Like i said, the battery worked fine before i replaced the keyboard and the old keyboard had been dead for 3 months before i decided to change it.

I tend to lift the middle cell group to make sure I have enough clearance to remove the keyboard and get the keyboard cable through. In the 13" models you need to lift the battery as the combo keyboard/track pad cable goes under the battery.

I doubt it was condensation more likely a spill. Did you see any staining on the keyboard cover under the logic board? Inspect the back side of the logic board for staining or signs of corrosion.

I got some water on the screen and didn't realise, I shut the MacBook with the water still there. So it could have been that too, although after opening it up and seeing the water on the screen there didn't seem to be much of it. But i know the keyboard is sensitive. The keyboard stopped working a couple of days after that.

If the battery is having problems from water damage, it seems odd to me that it would only be faulty now, 3 months after the keyboard stopped working and the day after i took the MacBook apart.

It doesn't take much ;-{

Tap water is not clean! It has minerals and salts which are still present on the surfaces after the water has evaporated. Bottled spring water is often heavy with minerals!
