Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy (older version) not talking?

We have changed the batteries out but it still isn’t responding when buttons are pushed (this one has buttons in the ears, paws, feet, and on the chest). I opened it up and one of the battery coils does look rusty. Is there a safe way to clean it? Any other ideas for us?

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Safety items (rubber gloves, mask, eye protection)
  • Cotton swaps
  • White vinegar
  • Pencil eraser

The corrosion is caused by potassium hydroxide which can leak out of the alkaline batteries. So it's best to wear disposable gloves while you're doing this because the chemicals may be caustic. You should also protect your eyes – you don't want this stuff in your eyes.

If your device wasn’t too damaged by alkaline battery corrosion, then next method should work for you.

  1. With rubber gloves on, remove batteries from the toy.
  2. Dip cotton swab (or toothbrush) in vinegar and blot off excess.
  3. Use a pencil eraser to remove corrosion.
  4. Place new batteries correctly and try to turn on.

If none of these steps work, it's sometimes possible to order a replacement circuit board for your device. You'll have to make your own decision about the cost and level of effort you're willing to put into the repair.

Hopefully you will manage to bring it back to life again with only a little bit of work.
