MacBook boots, keyboard lights on, fans off, black screen

Today I opened google chrome after a skype call and suddenly my screen turned black. I rebooted and it gives the chime, I type in the password (blind) and the keyboard lights turn on. When I hit some buttons I get the error sound. So all that is working. But the fans aren’t working and my macbook is basically silent. It is on but it isn’t…

i’ve worked as a specialist for the apple store so I know quite some things. I’ve done all the reset and key combinations but nothing works.

Also good to mention is that the usb devices still work…. I really don’t understand this.

does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Fans on that model just get in motion after a while, therefore unless you waited for some minutes fans may be working normal. Try plugging your Mac on an external monitor/TV, if you get the image there it might be a screen or backlight issue. You can confirm or rule out a backlight problem by pointing a light source to the screen, if you have a dimmed image then it’s a backlight issue.

Thank you for your answer but I don’t think you understood the problem. I left my mac on for hours on end trying if it would fix things. It is not turning on proper. The keylights work, the start up chime sounds but the fans don’t work and there is no sound of the macbook working at all. The screen is black. I disconnected the battery and plugged in the power the same thing happens. I connected it to a hdmi tv and an external screen thru thunderbolt adapter and no change either.

The mac starts but doesn’t. All that is working are the lights and a usb fan i plugged in to make the battery drain faster hoping maybe emptying it out would help but that also doesn’t work. I suspect it’s a logicboard issue.

I also tried the flashlight thing it doesn’t work.

@davenevar Just trying to give you some basic troubleshooting hints to get a step forward. Now the picture is clearer, no image on screen neither on external through thunderbolt rules out screen and backlight and clearly points to a logic board issue. You'll need to replace it or having it repaired, if possible and worthed economically, by someone into component level repairs.
