Kenmore is a popular appliance brand commonly sold by Sears, but Sears does not manufacture any of the appliances themselves. Instead, they source that out and have other manufacturers make their appliances for them. Kenmore refrigerators are made by a variety of different manufacturers including LG, Electrolux, GE, and Whirlpool.

Kenmore 10658902802 side-by-side HELP identifying and locating a part

So I was looking to see why the door latch was not closing tightly over the ice chute of my ice dispenser on the front of my freezer door. Once inside I saw that the pin had popped out of place that had the spring on it to close the hatch properly. When I went to pop the pin back in, the force of the spring on the pin pushed against the plastic hook-shaped molded piece and broke it. I don’t think any amount of glue is going to hold this piece into place, so the only other solution (besides not using it) would be to replace Part #1 in the diagram shown in the picture. However, I have not been able to find a part number or anyone selling this piece. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @joshua12585 ,

Did you try contacting the customer service number in this link and ask them what part #1 is known as or if it has a part number that you could search for?

Thanks jayeff,

I contacted them today. I did get a description for the part: Dispenser Housing. However, they are still working on finding me the right part number for my fridge model. I'll update the post if I find out more.

So they are telling me that this part is not serviceable and that this part only came with the door assembly. Therefore, I cannot order the part.

Called and talked to Whirlpool. They said the reason it is not serviceable is because that part is foamed into the door. So I'm going to have to come up with another solution to repair the broken piece.

Hi @joshua12585 ,

Can't see it too well on the diagram but can you replace the hook shaped molded piece with a contrived hook made up of a metal picture hook (or similar) riveted onto a small thin steel strip or bar which is then riveted into the plastic housing across where the molded hook was? The rivets shouldn't protrude too much into the foam or further (unless it is very thin there) and you could fill the rivet holes in the plastic housing with neutral cure silicone sealer before you rivet it thereby sealing the lot.

Just an idea

Jayeff,

I added some pictures. I'm going to try to glue something into place. It's a very tight area, so I don't think I can get a rivet tool in there, or even a drill to make a hole. I know glue isn't ideal, but I feel like that's the best option I have at the moment.

Hi @joshua12585 ,

Glue might be a bit problematical.

Not trying to put you off but a lot of glues react badly with certain plastics. e.g. I've had a supposedly strong glue actually melt the plastic (even though it said it was suitable for "most" plastics) that I was trying to glue down and on another occasion it would not even stick to a different type of plastic.

Also some glues may not do so well in the cold environment of a refrigerator.

Perhaps a two partepoxy resin adhesive -example only may be a better option.
