Razer Blade 14'' (2017) GPU showing code 43 in Windows

My Razer Blade 14’’ 2017 with an i7-7700HQ and a GTX 1060 is unable to use the GPU. Windows is showing error 43 in the device manager.

Naturally I've attempted to uninstall the driver and allow Windows to reinstall it upon reboot but that did not work. To ensure it wasn't a driver related issue I even formatted the SSD and installed Windows from a flash drive so all of the software is fresh. I did make sure to perform all updates from Windows with no luck.

I'm aware of the myriad of hardware related issues with these things so at this point I'm beginning to believe this to be a hardware issue rather than a software one.

If I missed any steps in troubleshooting the software side please let me know.

I'm curious if anyone has seen this happen on one of these Razer Blades… I haven't really seen anything online that had a solution and unfortunately there isn't a board diagram for these. I know a lot of the VRMs are prone to failure on these boards due to the excessive heat but before I open it and start poking around at things I felt it might be wise to seek some further advice.

UPDATE:

I installed GPU-z on the laptop to check if it could detect the GPU. It was able to, however the GPU showed no activity with clock rate of 0 MHz and so on. I’m pretty certain at this point that this is indeed a hardware issue but I’m willing to attempt to fix it. I don’t think the chip is dead but I could be wrong there. It does heat up when the laptop is running which is interesting considering it’s barely detected by the computer.

Don't know your laptop but just wondering if there are any GPU setting options available in BIOS e.g primary/secondary, disable /enable etc.

Have you checked the nVidia control panel (if it has one) to see what it shows?

Apologies if you've already been there but you never mentioned it.

Hey Jeyeff, no need to apologize! I really appreciate any willingness to help even if that requires asking questions.

Your question is a good one, I looked in the BIOS but I have not been able to find anything GPU related in there which struck me as odd and I had forgotten to mention that here. Based on this https://www.reddit.com/r/razer/comments/... it seems like it may actually be locked. Presumably because Razer knew their cooling solution was inadequate to support overclocking.

I will poke around a bit more and see if I can't find these options though.

@jayeff I checked again, I'm not seeing anything about the other GPU. I went ahead and did the modded BIOS and I now have some new config options related to the PCIe bus that the GPU is on (I believe.) I've been looking at this for a few days now it all just points back to the GPU hardware related issue.

Hi @viottolo ,

if you're not seeing anything in BIOS regarding the nVidia GPU (but you are for the Intel) then as you say, most probably it is a hardware related problem.

Can't find anything on the Razer support page, but perhaps you can ask them if they have a hardware diagnostics program for their laptops (e.g. like HP and Lenovo do) so that if the diagnostics can't find it either it is a definitely faulty GPU

@jayeff The interesting thing is that it's picked up in Windows as well as in GPU-z so I think in the case of it not showing up in the BIOS is normal for this BIOS. I'll check with Razer to see if they have more information on common failure points with these with regards to the GPU.

Checking your computer’s Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) may offer clues. In the Event Viewer window, go to the upper left-hand corner and double-click “Custom Views”. Then click “Administrative Events”. Scroll through the entries that appear to find any that might be related to your graphics card.

In some situations, an outdated BIOS could be causing a specific issue with a device that's making it report an issue to Windows, so updating your BIOS/UEFI may help.

You may have to replace your graphics card, but before you do, try re-seating it in its slot to see if that helps before you spend any money.

Hey Dan, thanks for the reply. I'll look into the Event Viewer again. I had checked it before and noticed a few errors but from what I recall they didn't hint at a lot. I'll post back with what I find here.

I'll check the BIOS version to see if there's any updates needed.

Re-seating the GPU would be rather tricky since this is a laptop. I don't think there are any specific issues with the chip itself but I need to dig deeper into that.
