I can't install macOS on my MacBook Pro system.

Hi!

I’m having a problem with my MacBook Pro, I replaced the HDD for a new SSD and when I try to format the drive or install the macOS I get a lot of errors and I can’t install …

Things what I’ve tried:

  • I change the hard drive flex
  • I try with another drive

Already installed the macOS on another drive and put into the computer.

What can be the problem?

I solved my problem with another hard drive cable. To be honest i used this part number connector 821-1480-A and i dont have any problem, finally i install macOS Mojave. So i think this a strange problem…

You would get much better help if you described the error messages you are receiving. A photo of the screen with the error message would be even better.

When im trying to install with recovery i see this on the console:

failed to verify installesddmg.pkg xar_verify failed

And when im trying to install with a usb i get somethin like this:

An error occurred when validating the installer data. the download is damaged or incomplete.

Did you use the old SATA cable or replace it? I was told by @danj that some 2012’s use the 2011 cable and it sounds like you have the old cable. This was brought to my attention when I recommended the ‘11/’12 systems as a direct replacement for a SATA II capped MBP. Changing the cable is a good practice anyway since the newer drives overload the original cables and it usually ends up solving the problem anyway.

The guide to change the cable can be found here, and the part can be found here. If you do not buy it here, you want the 821-2480-A or 821-2049-A. Anything else cannot be used with modern drives.

My additional patch work I am doing to prevent the problem

Since I am installing the 821-2049-A into my 2011 13” (couldn't get the other cable) and I did come up with another way to protect the new cable. The tape I use was rebranded but it's the same thing.

You can only do this to the connector side as it will interfere with the ability to tape it down to prevent it from moving if done on both sides.

I replace it because sometimes when i turn on my computer my macbook shows the "?" icon.

For that reason I suspected that it was the connector, and here i get another similar (part number: 821-1480-A) and that works correctly.. My previous connector which worked perfectly until a while ago, also had the same part number

So i dont know what is the real problem...

The 1480-A is old; don't use it. You want the revisions I put in the answer.

Yes you need a new HD SATA cable!

The original one is not rated for the higher speed of your new SSD.

You also want to place a stripe of electricians tape on the upper case where the cable crosses over, and you don't want to fold the cable with a sharp fold as that will damage the foil conductors inside use either bamboo skewer to help shape the radius of the turns.

@danj too bad it's harder to make that clear to '12 owners they may need to do it as well :-(. '11 buyers pretty much know it probably needs to be done unless it was advertised as fixed (and verified) or it was done by a previous owner and wasn't mentioned. Sometimes they're done if the original cable failed and the person fixing it used common sense and got the newer SATA III cable. I thought the '12 was safe since they didn't get well known to ship with SATA II hardware.

I know when I got mine it was more "When do I need to address this if it isn't", but that's because I got the i5 '11 since it's cheaper then the equivalent i5 '12 with no major penalties in terms of performance.

Did you format the drive GUID before trying to install the system? What systems are you trying to install?

Those systems want to impose APSF formatting on third party SSDs. You might try Sierra. How is the drive formatted?

The differences between High Sierra and Mojave are so minimal the upgrade is next to useless. I have the Mojave installer but haven't done it yet.

@nick - I don't recommend High Sierra as it has core level issues.

Its best to stick with Sierra on SATA based drive'd systems and if you have blade SSD's then go with Mojave for sure.

I still find issues with Mojave on SATA based systems as APFS construct requires a deeper queue the SATA interface does not offer, unlike the PCIe interface which does.

Take the time to read up on HFS+ and APFS file systems as well on SATA & PCI dialog you'll see what I'm talking about.

I never got hit with the APFS upgrade with High Sierra, but I also have a spinning drive for the time being. I only did it since my system shipped with 10.11 and I needed something more current without APFS.

I'm staying far away from Mojave since APFS on a spinning drive is nothing short of messy.
