Why is my MacBook Pro is extremely slow after upgrade to SSD?

Hey,

a month ago, I bought a new 1TB SSD samsung EVO 860 to change to my macbook pro 13” Mid 2013. First, I plugged in the SSD using a external SATA cable connected through a usb port to my macbook then format the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).

After that, I installed the macOS Mojave through installer while the HDD still running and it was a successful download. After waiting for some time, the download completed and I tried restarting the computer and click and holding on the ‘OPTIONS’ button to run my SSD instead. It was installing the OS and after approximately 8 minutes, I got to the start-up page to fill out my details, iCloud account, language etc. It was running smoothly and very fast. I downloaded all the necessary applications to see if it is actually working to my externally connected through SATA cable SSD. After downloading around for approximately 30 minutes, I shutted down the computer and returning on the macbook to see if it is still working and IT DID.

After that, I opened up my macbook and decided to replace my internal HDD drive with the SSD. When i turned it on, it was so slow. It took like 43 minutes to get it to the input password page. And when I had inputted the password, it took me nearly another 30 minutes to get to the display page with all the application to run. At first, I thought it needs some adjustment to the new environment so I waited. After 20 minutes of waiting, I tried opening chrome, and skype, it was so extremely slow.

I have tried so many ways from migrating assistant, internet recovery, macRecovery, reformatting my SSD more than 3 times but less than 6 times, using Carbon Copy cloner and none of these works. All the ways I mentioned just before, failed me to run the macOS itself. Only the one by running the HDD drive and installing the macOS by connecting the SSD as well works well for my computer.

Does any one can help me?? Any one else having this much problem from upgrading to SSD?? Do you think my SSD is a failed product and I should ask for a replacement? This hasnt been solved for more than a month now.

I’ve never done installs that way because I want to avoid any abnormal install methods that may cause issues.

What I do is install the SSD in the MacBook, run macOS Mojave install USB created via this method:

https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201372

  1. Assuming an OS is already installed on the SSD the command (option key) needs to be held down when turning on Mac to select the USB flash drive that contains MacOS Mojave Installer
  2. Once the installer menu appears use disk utility to format disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

# Close disk utility, go back to the install menu and go through Installing MacOS Mojave.

It could be all down to a failing hard drive cable. Does it boot just as slow with the hard drive put back in?

Do keep in mind the original drive in this system was only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) and the original HD SATA cable was only rated for SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). So you've now put in a great drive! But its much faster than the original drive, it's a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) and we are still using the older SATA II cable the system came with!

Needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable

So we need to replace the cable with the newer version which is rated for SATA III AND!! We need to protect it a bit more! Place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase when the cable crosses over and we don't damage the cable which is another cause! Don't fold it! You need to roll the bend points! I use the Ink Straw of a Bic pen do help me shape the radius of the bend into a smooth arc. A bamboo skewer will also work.

Once done you'll want to backup your drive and reformat it and install a fresh copy of the OS and then restore your apps and data as often times I find some files will have corruptions which only a file copy action will fix (don't clone!)

Just curious but doesn't the mid-2012 Unibody 2012 come with a SATA III cable by default?

No, it doesn't!

Apple shipped the system with a SATA II drive while the system could support a SATA III drive (SATA logic on the logic board)

But the cable!' That dam cable! Was not properly constructed to support the faster data flows of a SATA III drive. Then to add to it! SSD drives push the I/O even harder than a HDD! Apple again needed to upgrade the cable from the complaints still again!

To save me the grief of an upset customer I always replace the cable when I put in a new HDD or SSD.

@danj If I want to replace my HDD cable, how do I know if the replacement is sata III "upgraded" ?

@Henri D - At this point in time it cam be tricky!

Apple stopped making the part and I assume the vendors who had made it, have also stopped making them as well.

So what is now on the shelf could be the dusty remains of the old stock which was never used.

So... This gets down to getting something cheap playing the odds or going with someone with a good track record.

I'm not a betting man ;-} MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable

Don't forget! Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb Place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over. Also don't crease the cable as you'll damage it! Use an old BIC pen Ink stray to help you form the bends not to exceed the radius of the straw.
