The GPU is soldered to the logic board this system uses DDR5 VRAM not HBM2 VRAM.

As for the CPU its socketed but you are limited to what CPU’s this series offered EveryMac - iMac19,1 systems

Sounds like you want to do some heavy graphics here. I would recommend you wait until after WWDC to see what Apple discloses.

I checked the link and saw the 27 inch iMac can be configured with 9900k. I don’t think Intel will ever have something better (which requires more power supply) in the Coffee lake refresh family. I don’t see why you’re limited wht this series offered? There’s no reason a G5420 wouldn’t work, although you may not want to do that.

Unlike the 21.5inch iMac, the power supply may be the constrain why one can’t put higher performance CPU on it.

@shuotong_li - The systems firmwares micro code is the issue independent of the TDP of the CPU and the ability of the systems power supply and cooling. All three limit you on what can be used for a CPU if the socket even supports it.

Thank you, I would assume in this case the firmware can only boot whatever CPUs that apple had put on the machine then. @danj

That is correct! You can only use what Apple used in the given series with rare exception.
