Can I swap ssd from MacBook Pro late 2013 into MacBook Pro early 2015?

Is it possible to remove SSD from old MacBook Pro and reinstall it in the new one and have it boot without issue?

What has to be done to keep the data on the SSD and boot?

Do i risk damaging the SSD or the computer?

My question is more than if it will fit in the slot, but rater, will the new computer boot the old computers drive, seeing it probably has slight differences in specs.

If it boots, will it be buggy or work completely normal?

P.S.: old computer trackpad is broken, but has 1T storage vs new computer only has 125GB storage

Slight spec differences:

  • 2013 / 2015
  • 2.8GHZ / 2.7GHZ
  • i7 core / i5 core

Here’s the differences between your systems SSD’s

  • Your Late 2013 13” MacBook Pro has a PCIe 2.0 x2 interface
  • Your newer Early 2014 13” MacBook Pro has a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface

So while you can use your older SSD in your system so you have more space, you lose quite a lot of performance!

Frankly, I would leave the SSD alone in the system and instead get a this case: OWC Envoy Pro - Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Enclosure For Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models) to support your older drive.

I did answer it!

"So while you can use your older SSD in your system so you have more space, you lose quite a lot of performance!"

Yes! It will work, but, its much slower! It has half of the I/O (2 lane vs 4 lane) and using a slower interface PCIe/AHCI (PCIe 2.0 x2) Vs PCIe/NVMe (PCIe 3.0). Given the need for speed I would recommend leaving the smaller faster SSD in your system.

Doesn't hurt to try, should boot up fine. Make sure to unplug battery when swapping SSDs out.
