SSD disk 1TB does not work properly

Hello,

I have Macbook Pro late 2011 and I have now new SSD disk KINGSTON SUV500480G . It has 480 GB and works perfectly. I have High Sierra OS

Problem is I wanted upgrade my disk capacity and bought Samsung 860 Evo 1TB.

I tried various installation, but this disc does not work properly. I joined it like external and erase it like APFS and second time like Journaled and then installed High Sierra from installer. But in both cases it did not boot well and then it was freezing and very slow. Is it possibility to make it work?

Thank you for your help.

Update (06/04/2019)

@danj @arbaman @mayer Guys thank you very much for your expert know-how, it really WORKS! :-) 1TB Samsung 860 EVO now goes flawlessly on my late 2011 Macbook :-)

I put electrician tape under the cable and also in place, where goes through the DVD I put in on the aluminium case above.

Your Macbook model has a hard drive cable not exactly suitable for use with today’s faster SSDs. Following A1278 model got a better cable..it might be sufficient to replace that part to be able to use your new EVO drive without glitches. Here’s the cable I’m referring to, you can have a look at it and compare it with yours:

To add to @arbaman the original drives used where only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) today you have faster drives SATA III (6.0 Gb/s). Your system is able to support the faster SATA III drives but the original cable is not rated to run that fast! which is a very common issue with this series.

Place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over. In addition you want to roll the bends using either a Bic ball point pen ink straw or a bamboo skewer. Don't fold the cable! A sharp bend damages it, you want a nice smooth arc.

Hello Dan and arbaman, thank you very much. One thing - the 480GB SSD disc is working flawlessly and in System Report it writes

Product: 6 Series Chipset

Link Speed: 6 Gigabit

Negotiated Link Speed: 6 Gigabit

so it looks like this data cable can run that fast.

I wonder if the problems with 1TB SSd disc are because of capacity of this disc and then I can forget about upgrade to any 1TB SSD disc,

or if it is because of special incompatibility with Samsung EVO? Then I maybe can return it and try this Kingston but with greater capacity

@izakfunk - All I install is Samsung SSD's! I've easily installed well over a thousand in Mac systems now. Your Samsung SSD is AOK!

Sadly, just because a SSD has a SATA III interface doesn't mean it's able to fill the SATA channel fully. Newer higher performing drives can push the limits of the cable.

Think of it this way... You're on a winding road in the mountains can you go as fast as your car can go?

Let's say you have an old Ford model T which has a top speed of 25 MPH no problem for it right?

But! now lets say we have a Bugatti Chiron You would fly off the road at the first chicane curve! Now which would win the race on a flat track?

This is the same issue here! The cable can't support the drive you now have, the difference is like the Model T Vs the Chiron on that mountain road.

Please replace the cable and don't crease the cable! Trust us we've fought this battle too many times!

@izakfunk I fully agree with @danj , I would be thinking the EVO drive has better _real_ speed and brings cable to the limit where it starts giving trouble. I wouldn't be concerned at all about its size, that's irrelevant in this case, a better cable should be all you need to get back to smile again ;)

To add to arbaman’s spot on answer. The only reason I am posting this is so I can post a photo.

To protect the cable from future damage, I use 3M Extreme Mounting Tape (red tape in photo), on either side of the cable to prevent the bottom on the case coming into contact with the cable and damaging it:

I had a 2012 13" in a few weeks ago that wouldn't have needed a replacement cable if it was protected on the top side as it seems to show your picture. I couldn't see anything at eyesight, but under the microscope one could see some surface abrasion caused by the bottom cover pushing on the cable. I was a bit surprised myself, but the cable replacement fixed the issue.

@arbaman I have also found a few that the sharp edge of the hard drive retainer bar have cut into the cable as evidenced by burn marks on the cable that are hidden from view until you remove the old cable.

@mayer And what is this yellow piece of foil? If I understand it right You use instead of electrician tape yellow foil to cover the cable and then red stretch tape to fix it?

@izakfunk That's Kapton tape, also called Polyimide Tape
