Flickering Display before repair, now no display at all

EDIT: June 26, 2019

I brought it to another repair shop, and they’ve managed to fix it! They said it was the bridge between the board and internal display, something like that, and that the first repair shop just technically murdered my macbook by adding jumpers into various parts of the board which are not needed at all.. So happy, and thank you guys again for the help!

Hi guys, so my Macbook Pro 2012 is having display problem. This one specifically:

It flickers like that while connected to the charger, when you remove the charger, it will not have a display at all, but pointing a flashlight on it, you’ll still see images, so it’s the backlight i think.. also, after being turned on and connected to the charger for about 15mins, the display will stabilize , BUT, increasing the brightness pass the 3rd level, the display will start to flicker again.. so technically it’s useable but very dim.

Now, I brought it to a local repair shop, and they said it was due to PCH heating up, and almost impossible to replace but they still tried, though failed. Now, i think it got more “ruined” because the display now looks like this:

just quick white flickering light. also I tried doing the flashlight thing behind the apple logo and now it doesn’t have any image at all, just white light..

Im planning on bringing it to another apple repair shop maybe they’d have a different insight, but I also want to know what you guys think on the issue, I’m worried they totally f’ed up the display, I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cables but still the same.. im just hoping i can get the display back.. external display works without issue.

also here are some pics of the board after the “repair”.. one of the parts look burnt, also they added a small copper wire near the lsvd cable, what is that for?

Did they charge you for messing up your system? I would go back and get your money back as you'll need to find someone else to properly fix your logic board.

The problem was not the PCH! If it was they your external monitor would also react in the same way as the video signal from the GPU would be effected Vs just the internal display.

Think of it this way ... You have a desktop with two displays plugged in. And you had one display have a problem would you jump to assume the CPU logic was at fault?

It would be either the the given display or if you had two different GPU cards one of the cards had failed. Swapping the display connections would have told you which it was.

Here we don't have two GPUs, so we know it's got to be the displays logic not the CPU logic.

At this point does your external monitor work?

Fortunately(?) no, they didn't charge me.. i see, i should've asked here for guidance first.. :/ im so annoyed..

anyway yes, the external display still works, i'm currently typing this reply on my macbook connected to an external monitor.

is it safe to assume they totally killed the display? im also wondering what's that burnt part on my board, it didn't have that before the "repair".

Here’s a good block diagram of the video (DP) port:

Your issue is within the MUX logic area. As you know the signal is making it out the external DP (Thunderbolt) port so only the iDP (internal DP) area has a problem. I would test the logic board display connector as well as use a spare display to make sure the display was OK.

Without having this on my bench I couldn’t tell you what is bad now and to add to it we don’t know why they bridged a trace as well as what other alterations they did. I’m suspecting they tried replacing the chip and damaged a pad in the process. I had this problem once before if I remember correctly it was a bad capacitor in the latch logic.

At this point you’ll need to find someone with better skills and access to the needed parts. If you need your system this may take some time, the other approach is just replace the logic board MacBook Pro 13" Unibody 2012末主板更换 iFixit only has MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) 2.5 GHz Logic Board If you need the more powerful version you’ll need to do some hunting! The 2.9 GHz logic boards Apple P/N is 661-6589.

I see, thanks for that! I'll make sure to note this when I bring this to another repair shop, hopefully, they won't mess my MacBook further.
