Freezer cold, refrigerator is warm

Whirlpool Freezer up top. mod: W8TXEWFYB03. Approx 4-5 years old

freezer stays cold, warm refer. I have defrosted it. The compressor is working. The fan in the freezer works occasionally, but randomly stops. If I open it up and “flick it” it will start going again. All is well for awhile, then it will “die out” again. I don’t get it.. Originally thought it might be the fan motor, but works occasionally. Now thinking a control board? Problem is I live remote, and shipping is a 2-3 week adventure, just want to make sure I order right parts versus just buying a new one.

Hi @dsk5835 ,

It could be an intermittent connection in the fan.

If you have a DMM (digital multimeter) and you know how to use it, try testing the fan motor power supply at the fan’s harness connector or even on the fan itself if the terminals are accessible to check if it is there or not when the fan stops.

Be safety aware:

Most refrigerator fans are operated at household mains voltage i.e. 120VAC (or 240VAC depending on location), which can be lethal or cause serious injury if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you don’t know what you’re doing leave it to the experts!

If the voltage is still there when the fan has stopped running then the motor is faulty (or it is faulty between where you’re testing from and the fan motor).

If there is no voltage there then the problem is back towards the control board. Either in the wiring or on the control board itself. See if you can locate the same coloured wires leading away from the fan (they may change colours at the harness connector) on the connector to the control board. If you think that you have identified the correct wires, test there to see if the fan voltage supply is present or not. If yes and you don’t have it at the fan there is a wiring problem between the fan and the control board. If no then most likely it is the board.
