Why will my mbp not boot?

This past weekend my mbp became sluggish to the point that I thought some type of malware had infected it. It would crash restart when I would launch Firefox. Luckily I had my data backed up. I ran the hardware diagnostics and everything came back fine. No issues. I reloaded the OS (without wiping the drive) but I still had the same problem. One thing that I did notice is that I would have to restart my mbp multiple times to get it to boot, it would not play the startup sound. I took out the battery and from that point on it rebooted every-time I turned it on.

I wiped my disk using disk utility and and again reloaded the OS. (clean install this time). I got everything set up and reinstalled a new version of Firefox and Avast. A few minutes later Apple told me that I had updates ready to be installed. Thinking that I wanted my mbp to be be totally protected I let it install the updates. During the update it got hung and never recovered. After a few hours I restarted my mbp and now all I get is the light at the front turning on. No sounds, no attempt to boot. I put a new HD in it thinking it could be a bad boot sector but I realize that it is not even getting to that point.

My question is, is this a software, or hardware problem? Was it the update that killed it? I had not had any issues prior to this time with my mbp. Is there anything that I can do to fix it? I have googled and read many articles, but I have not found one that matches my scenario. Any help is appreciated.

What new hard drive did you use? What system are you trying to install. I suspect a formatting problem if you are trying High Sierra or Mojave,

I am trying to reload High Serria, the same OS that I have been running since it came out and I believe the last one that I can run on that hardware. I don't think it is the HD, as it is not even getting to the point that it see's the HD. When I hit the power button, the light comes on in front, but it does not attempt to do anything to mount a disk, load an OS.

I just tried it again and I got it to attempt to boot. It is now going to internet recovery mode. It is hit or mis, so I am ruling out a hardware problem. I am at a loss.

Just reran the Apple Hardware test. 2:29:16 later it reported:

No trouble found.

So it has to be a software issue. One would think that if the hard drive was removed the system would still attempt to boot, and then report that no hard drive was found. Is that not a true statement? The problem that I am having is that the system is randomly failing to doing anything other than turn on the front light. At a loss here.

I’m thinking you have a damaged HD SATA cable or you’ve updated the drive to a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) and still have the older cable which is only rated for SATA II (3.0 Gb/s).

Do tell us what the drive is make and model so we can double check its specs.

The original drive is a Toshiba HDD 2J62 / MK5065GGSXF 500GB. The other drive is a Samsung HM250JI 250GB. Is it possible that an update from apple could have caused an issue? I also have a 1 TB hybrid drive that I purchased for this mbp but it is not in the equation right now. My wife's computer is the same model but she has hers set to not automatically install updates.

The system has only been opened maybe 3 times before this issue.

These are older drives both are listed as SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). So you're not pushing the cable but you still could have a worn cable.

Why don't you replace the HD SATA cable and jump to the hybrid drive?

You'll want this version of the cable MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable And yes, this is the 2012 version which is the better version of the cable. You'll want to apply a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over. The last issue is the corner folds. A very common issue is people over do the fold. You don't want a sharp fold you want a radius arc. I use a ball point pen ink tube to bend the cable around it gives a nice smooth bend. Here's the guide you'll want to follow MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable Replacement
