3 Beeps on Startup. Right Ram Slot fails after switching modules.

After starting my Imac normally , it won’t boot making a 3 beep sound.

After doing a research I understood that it had a RAM error. I removed both modules and I installed only the left or the right module in the left slot and they worked whereas they didn’t work when installed on the right slot.

Also, they worked just once or two times when installed together, but then again after some restarts the same loop continued.

I cleaned the modules while tried to put compressed air in the right slot. More, I tried to clean the right slot with a paintbrush. Nothing worked!

I have at least 10 years to open the RAM slots and change something and it seems really strange that just all of a sudden the right slot fails to load either of the modules.

Each RAM module has 2GB. So, in total my Imac has 4GB.

I am running MAC OS X 10.6.8

Dunno what else to do. PLZ HELP!!!

You’ll need to get a 4 GB module to place in the working slot. Thats the best you can do.

PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM

Any suggestion why it worked just once or two?

Did it worth replacing the slot or it is not possible or worthwhile?

More, is it possible to put another type of 4GB module?

Thx a lot Dan!

Sorry my crystal ball is a bit cloudy today ;-} Can't tell you why it stopped working.

You can't really replace the slot hardware as its pretty well mounted to the logic board. You could change out the logic board but I think thats going overboard here. This system is on the older side and likely doesn't have much life left in it. Frankly, I wouldn't use it online any more as the newest OS it can use is OS-X El Capitan 10.11.x which is no longer getting security updates so you do put your personal information at risk.

You've lost the slot so now you need to think outside of the box on how to get back to at least 4 GB of RAM. Take both Modules out and put in a single 4 GB module which your system can support in the one working slot. I would have loved for you to get to the max this system can support but thats just not in the cards.

For reference your system can support a max of 6 GB.

After doing a memtest86, everything seemed fine, No errors at all. I shut down the iMac installed the other 2GB on the right slot and it worked even after 2 restarts.

My iMac wants to drive me crazy.

I know that I have to upgrade to a new Mac sooner or later as it's been 12 years since I bought this mac.

Any suggestions which older IMac is getting OK reviews? Models 2013/2014/2015 year?

Thanks for the info!
