New SSD not recognized

HI all,

I recently bought the Transcend SSD 855 480 GB SSD upgrade for my MacBook Pro retina 13” mid 2014 (A1502)

My system was on Yosemite, I had reformatted my original SSD and installed Mojave on it.

I replaced my SSD with the new one but it was not showing up. I also tried to run the cmd but it was not detected. I then put back the original SSD and booted up the system, connected the new SSD using Thunderbolt port and it was showing up in Disk Utility.

I followed the instructions and erased the Transcend drive and then installed again on my system still same issue

I noticed that on the recovery mode when I try to select the option reinstall OS it gives the option to install the older Yosemite and not the new OS

Any suggestion?

Thanks

OK lets see if we can break thru the gordian knot you have your self in.

Yosemite file system requires HFS+ When you upgraded to Mojave the installer upgraded your SSD to APFS in addition it also updated your systems firmware so APFS volumes can be booted.

The hidden recovery partition you still have for some reason is still setup for Yosemite. You’ll need to use the Internet recovery services to configure your new SSD About macOS Recovery. Here we want to use the keys Option-⌘-R to get the latest version installed with the new SSD mounted internally in your system.

Once you get the OS installed you should be OK.

I have another issue now :( the mac can't be left as idle (just by closing the screen) for more than a day or sometimes a couple of hours.

when i open the pc again the screen is on but black and the apple on the back is light up. the only way to get the mac back is to press and hold the power button, then the system boots twice and it comes back up.

I tried to verify the idle set up and do not put the hard drive on sleep but nothing changed.

any idea?

Hi Dan, once the computer firmware is APFS upgraded with Mojave is it possible to boot this computer with a HFS+ OS or we're stuck with the APFS settings ?

I haven't made a big study of it. So far my older MacBook Pro system is able to.

Keep in mind the newer Mac systems may not (the ones APFS where shipped with)

I still recommend SATA based systems stick with HFS+ (HDD or SDD) and only newer PCIe/NVMe SSD based use APFS.

Fusion Drives should stick with HFS+ but you may not have a choice!

Nice to see you again!
