Constant fan blank screen

Ill start from the beginning…

One morning i had the no symbol icon when I went to turn on my iMac. Ran the Apple Diagnostics and the only error I got was a sensor error for the SSD from OWC.

I sent them back the drive. I put in the original drive and worked fine and no more error. They sent me a replacement. While I had the iMac open i decided to go one step further and take out the logic board and clean the CPU (Applying some fresh arctic thermal paste) and heatsink and fans.

All this I have done once before when I put the SSD in. Since i was there I decided to change the CMOS battery with a new one just because it was there and they are cheap. I put everything back together and im confident I have every cable secure in there.

I tried to reset the PRAM /SMC but its still the constant fan on and blank screen. I am currently going to take it back apart and again very carefully go through everything step by step just to make sure…

Any ideas? Thanks

When its in this state do you see any glow from the backlight? What does an external display show you.

I currently have it apart again logic board out going over everything with a fine tooth comb. I believe it was as black as could be. I dont recall it being illuminated at all...maybe the lcd cable wasnt in tight although i do not believe that to be the case but maybe and hopefully....going to put back together again soon

It was hard to tell but i BELIEVE the problem was one or two of the pins on the CPU were bent. Was very subtle tried to straighten them out but didnt work. Bought a new logic board and now im stuck…has the folder with question mark icon that comes up. I booted to a Mojave installer and tried to just reload the OS and it says the firmware for the computer needs to be updated first. Any suggestions? thanks

Alright so I took apart the imac again removed the Airport card and reseated it just incase. Prior to all this I had no issue with the wifi. Ethernet appears to be working now. I installed bootcamp with Windows 10 and still no Wifi. Bluetooth works and arent they on the same card? Is that odd that bluetooth is working but wifi is not? I reinstalled Mountain Lion via USB installer since thats that it came with and installed some updates for that OS and still no wifi…Not sure if I spend the money on a new airport card or send the logic board back and try a different one? Can this airport card be updated to a wireless AC card?

You’ll need to contact OWC to get the updated firmware for your SSD.

Ok so I reached out to OWC they suggested to try the internet recovery back to factory OS which I believe is Mountain Lion but that didnt work. I put in the original drive which had Sierra and i upgraded it to Mojave via USB installer. Once I got back into the OS I noticed I have no Wifi and the Ethernet doesnt work. Maybe problem with Logic board (said to have been fully tested from working maching) maybe not? I put in a USB ethernet adapter and that is working. Im currently installing updates but im not sure what else to do? Should i try to reinstall mountain lion through USB installer or try again from the internet recovery? Thanks

Does sound like you have a logic board problem. Was this a replacement board?

Ok this has been a long project. But im all done. The original problem I believe was a bent pin or two on the cpu socket although it was hard to tell. The 2nd problem was maybe a bad replacement board. I got another replacement for that and all seems well. I used a HDD to upgrade all the way to Mojave then swapped back to my SSD and everything appears to be working. Mark this as closed if possible. thanks
