Fridge Compressor and Evaporator Fan Sequence Please

Friend’s fridge. When it comes on (Maytag MBL1953XES1), a device starts up, then shortly after, another device starts up. So there are two devices making some noise. She tells me the first noise is sounding strained like something is wrong and is keeping her up at night. She says when she opens the bottom freezer drawer, that is where the noise is heard well - so I figure the compressor or the evaporator fan. I can’t tell the two noises apart when I hear it and it doesn’t seem that loud, but at night when it’s quiet, it keeps her up. I say if we can figure out which turns on first, then we know which part is the culprit.

Can you tell me what device comes on first? The compressor (my guess), or the evaporator fan?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

With most refrigerators the evaporator fan will stop when you open a door and it will start again when the door is closed. You don't want to blow the cold air out of the refrigerator, it falls out by itself fast enough ;-)

The evaporator fan and the compressor usually shut down together when the set temp has been reached and will start up together when the temp has to be driven back down again.

By placing an ear against the cabinet you should be able to hear the fan stop and start when you open and close a door.

The compressor can continue to run when the door is open as it is still trying to drive down the temp to the correct temperature if it hasn’t been reached yet.

So if the noise stops with a door open then most likely it is the fan.

If it doesn't then most probably it is the compressor or a problem with the sealed system.

If you determine that the problem is in the compressor/sealed system section, consult the manufacturer's warranty in the owner’s manual for the fridge as according to this link there is a 10 year warranty on the compressor for Maytag fridges.

Here’s a link link to the section of the fridge showing the relevant parts which may be of some help.

When I open the freezer door, the fan is still on and I can feel the breeze at the back vents. Hence the problem of hearing both the compressor and fan and not being able to distinguish the two.

Hi,

Perhaps the evap fan is running all the time due to a faulty freezer door light switch part #16.

What happens when you open the fridge door (not the freezer door), can you hear the evap fan stop?

Does the freezer light turn on and off OK when you push the freezer door switch manually, simulating opening and closing the door?
