Will replacing screen fix touch firmware issue.

I have a surface Pro 4 that the touch does not work. I get the yellow caution with the ! in it. The troubleshooting tells me that the Touch firmware did not install due to an error. When I try and use a firmware update it tells me the firmware is already installed. So will replacing the screen fix my firmware detection issue and get the touch working?

Well I went ahead and ordered a n-trig board and a new screen. The old one actually cracked on me. Well I replaced the screen and the n-trig. The Yellow caution went away ant the firmware loaded just fine. But the touch still does not work. I have not put the screen in with adhesive yet. My next option is to replace the ribbon cable that connects to the screen and n-trig board. This is really frustrating. I love this device and it does everything I need in a portable light powerful computer. It just annoys me that the touch does not work.

Hey Bill! Did replacing the ribbon cables, N-Trig, and/digitizer end up resolving your problem? I'm having the same issue and am about to pull the trigger on the 3 piece set. (board and both cables) Thanks in advance if you reply!

No, it did not fix the touch issue. It has to be an issue on the motherboard.

Update, I have not given up on the touch not working. I actually found a cheap new old stock motherboard. I put it in and. And it did not fix my problem. The only possibility is the n-trig board I ordered was faulty. I might order another one. They are super cheap just to bring this saga to an end.

Hey there Bill,

I would completely uninstall the Touch Screen drivers through the device manager (Microsoft link here), as I suspect the issue is in relation to the drivers not being completely installed correctly.

If after that reinstall, you are still experiencing the issues, I would manually download the most recent surface pro 4 touchscreen drivers from Microsoft and try again.

Quick answer: I think its a software and not a hardware issue.

Follow all of the steps in that Microsoft guide, as that will be the most reputable source in the repair. If you have any further questions or simply need guidance, I’ll try my best to help.

I have tried all of these steps multiple times. There was an update for the touch drivers. I went ahead and let it install. Same issue no touch functionality. When I goe to device manager under firmware. The Surface Touch still shows the Yellow caution sign with the ! on it. I click on it and it reads "Device cannot start. (Code 10) "Indicates a revision number encountered or specified is not one known by the service. It may be a more recent revision than the service is aware of."

This is the loop I have been stuck in. I delete the drivers and reinstall just to get the Code 14 for a restart and then a code 10 after two restarts. Microsofts response is to send it to them with $450 for a replacement.

I really apprciate your response. But it looks as if I am stuck with a Surface that will stay connected to the keyboard.

I am thinking about removing the screen and replacing the NTrig board that controls the digitizer. It is less than $20 and I might get lucky. Just weighing my options. Do I want to risk damaging another component just to try and fix the touch screen problem? If I crack the screen, I am out $150 for a new screen.

You're welcome to do what you want, just remember that smaller form factor means smaller parts, and dealing with digitizers is never fun.

Well I am at a total loss. I found a motherboard that is the exact same model as mine. It was cheap enough so I bought it and swapped it out. Well after a new install of windows the touch still does not work. The only original part on this machine other than the RF shielding is the m.2 drive. I will just fall out if it turns out to be the m.2 drive. I can not imagine how that would be the case. But I will try it later.

Try getting to Microsoft support anyway, it is not recommended to repair any Surface tablets due to the sheer difficulty in part procurement and disassembly.

Replacing the screen is not something that I can not handle. I have repaired several iPad screens and Samsung phone screens. I have all the tools required. I have also done surface mount component replacements. The only problem now is my eyesight is not what it used to be.

Did you try this? I am in the same boat and have been for some time. My touch screen isn’t working and I have the yellow !.... I’ve tried everything more than once. I’ve even wiped my surface and reinstalled a clean Microsoft 10, more than once. Followed by updating all of the drivers. My screen isn’t cracked or broken and Microsoft says it’s a hardware issue and to spend $500 to get a new surface. It’s mind boggling. Everything else runs perfectly smooth.

I did replace the screen and used a new NTrig board. And it did not fix my issue. I did a complete wipe and install of windows 10. And no touch. It has to be something on the mainboard.

This is a tough screen to replace, definitely recommend i-opener and lots of patience. Well, if you care about the screen that comes out.

The used screen I received + new board did not change this issue, I've tried several different uninstall/reinstall variations, including going to Windows 10 previous versions. No luck still.

Random thought, the computer seems to lag sometimes, I press on specific spots to alleviate

Taping the screen in: the bottom seems to have not done well on mine, using 2 mm double sided, one

I replaced the screen with a new one and installed a new ntrig board. It did not fix the touchscreen issue. It must be a motherboard issue. And yes, the screen is a bugger to replace. I actually dropped something on the screen and cracked it. That gave me the push to go ahead and replace it. But it did not fix my issue.

On mine, the issue seems too revolve around a broken Intel ME firmware. The currently installed version is lower than the minimum, when using fwupd from Linux, and won't process the firmware update.

I replaced everything that has to do with the touch screen. The n-trig board, the cables and the screen. The surface Pro4 does not have a digitizer that can be replaced. It is all built into the screen. The problem is a hardware issue on the motherboard.
