Burnt chip? White screen but external monitor works.

Hi, new here and I’m facing a pretty annoying problem.

I’ve had my MacBook Pro late 2011 2.4 for a few years and I love it. Issue is my screen cracked a few months ago but was still working fine.

Recently, in the past two or three weeks, it stopped working. All I got was a grey screen like it is with the apple logo but no logo. I got really worried because I had bought a new SSD and increased my ram for a speed boost AND when the screen stopped working bought a new screen but no luck.

I tried all the button combinations, nothing worked.

Tried taking the cable off and wiping it clean, nothing. The only way I can use my laptop is with an external screen.

I’m pulling my hair trying to figure it out until two days ago I was looking very closely at the logic board and realized there was a bit of a burn mark near the video cable, a little below it. Could this be the issue?

Do I have to replace my logic board? Is it possible to resolder or replace the chip?

If I have to replace the board should or could I upgrade to the 2012 2.9?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Could this possibly be the fix?

I was looking at the board the other day and noticed the 2nd pin was actually off the board and loose. I pulled it out with a tweaser after I couldn’t get the ribbon to fit properly. I have a donor board from 2009 for extra resistors.

It is very likely that the damaged screen damaged the logic board. It’s not a typical DIY repair, but it can most probably be repaired by someone into component level repairs if you have one in your area or feel like mailing in your Mac. In case you decide to replace the board instead you can use an i7 from 2012 too, but make sure it comes with the heatsink as that is different from yours. You’ll have to replace your screen as well, if you plug it to the new board it would probably damage that too.

My thoughts too. I have already replaced the screen but it’s just a white/grey screen. Everything else works fine. Thanks for the quick response.

Sadly waiting to address your screen has now damaged your logic board.

Here’s the IFIXIT guide to replace the display assembly 2011年末 MacBook Pro 13" 一体化机型显示屏更换 and the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Early 2011-Late 2011) Display Assembly which you’ll need to do first.

As far as the blown component this will require some deeper skills and access to the needed part, are you up to fixing it? If not you’ll need to find someone to do it for you. But to save money if you have the tools and skills to replace the display I would do that first.

Any chance I could do this? I do have some experience soldering and the necessary equipment. Wouldn’t be my first time but I don’t know which chips, if any, were burnt.

Carefully clean the area with some isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab and take a second pic of the area as the burnt junk is blocking us seeing the full extent of the damage.
