Hi,

Try a power refresh and check if this resolves the problem.

Here’s how to do this:

Remove the main battery from the laptop

Press and hold the laptop’s Power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power from the laptop.

Connect and switch on the charger to the laptop and try to start the laptop. (leave the main battery out at this stage)

If it still doesn’t start, switch off and disconnect the charger, and then disconnect the RTC battery (CMOS battery) from the motherboard and press and hold the laptop’s power button for 30 seconds.

Here’s a link to the service manual. Scroll to p.65 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the RTC battery. Take note of the orientation of the battery connector before you remove it, so that you re-insert it the correct way.

Then reconnect the RTC battery, reconnect and switch on the charger and try to start the laptop.

If the laptop starts, allow the laptop to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, allow the HDD activity to settle and then shutdown the laptop in the normal manner.

When it has completely shutdown, switch off the charger and reinsert the main battery into the laptop.

Switch on the charger and then try to turn on the laptop.

If it starts allow the laptop to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, allow the HDD activity to settle and then check the charge status of the main battery. If it is charging, allow it to fully charge before disconnecting the charger.

Also if it now works OK, it may be that the RTC battery is failing (or has failed) and needs to be replaced.

The RTC battery is non rechargeable battery that has a life span of 5-7 years approx. Once it gets too low (or is flat - no pun intended) it is possible for the BIOS to become corrupted and prevent a normal startup. Removing the RTC battery allows corrupted BIOS settings (if any) to revert back to their factory default condition.

I done all these. It still doesn’t boot. I use a compatible adapter, maybe it’s not offering enough power or is defective?

Hi,

Did you check with a Voltmeter to see if the RTC battery was OK or whether it was discharged and had to be replaced? It is NOT a rechargeable battery.

my laptop turned on for a second or two but then turned off. when i started it up it showed the hp logo an before i could do anything the laptop turned itself off. sometimes i would turn the laptop on and it would go into windows repair mode, i noticed at this point the laptop would stay on for about 30 seconds or longer before turning off.The charger was the issue with my laptop. when i first got my new charger and tried to turn the laptop on it would just restart within 1 to 2 seconds of turning it on. i did all the hard reset resets but it was still the same it would keep truning off. i then left the laptop on charge for about 15 minutes before returning to it and when i pressed the power button the laptop started up and went into windows repair mode, when it did its repair thing it just asked me to restart the laptop or go into advanced option. i restarted the laptop and it started up first time, it hasn’t turned off on me yet so i hope its been fixed.hope this helps others too.

i basically did a hard reset and it wasn’t working on the first few attempts but then i left the battery to charge for about 15 minutes and when i fired up the laptop it worked
