MacBook Pro keeps shutting down on start up.

There are a lot of similar questions out there but I have not been able to find a good answer…

On start up, 10-15 seconds after I hear the chime my MacBook Pro shuts down. I’ve removed the bottom case and observed the following:

  • A ton of dust which I removed; No help.
  • Both fans kick in on start up but then everything shuts down.

This is both with battery and power adapter.

  • I removed the battery and tried with just power adapter; same thing.
  • I had upgraded the RAM several years ago so I swapped out the newer RAM and installed the original RAM; still the same thing.

I’m suspecting the logic board… Unless there is something else I can try.

I was thinking that if I have to replace the logic board to upgrade from a 2.66 to a 3.06 GHz (from what I’ve been able to gather this can be done.

I’m also thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive (or hybrid) to a larger capacity or go with a SSD drive.

With everything reconnected what is the color of the MagSafe connecter Amber or Green? Locate the battery checker button on the left edge when you press it do all the LED's light up and do they stay on or blink?

完成的

The LED connector is green when first hooked up but turns red (amber) if the battery is not fully charged. When I press the battery checker button the green LEDs light up and stay on except if the battery need charging then as the battery charges each green LED blinks in turn and stays steady on as the battery fills up.

Unless it’s been done earlier, but the ton of dust you mentioned makes me think otherwise, you’ll need to replace the thermal paste which is most probably dried out and useless to dissipate heat. The 10/15 seconds seems a bit of a short time for thermal protection shutdown, but nonetheless that’s the simplest and cheapest thing to try in my opinion.

Thanks. I will try before replacing logic board.

I replaced the thermal paste but now my screen does not come on and there is no chime, just the power light comes on at the front. Someone else had a similar problem on here and it looks like her logic board fried. Maybe the same thing happened to me. So now I am ordering a logic board w/heat sink from ifixit. It comes with a warranty but I know it must be used. Do I have to replace the thermal paste on it? Does anyone know?

@billtomaras Maybe there's been some overheating and the board got fried indeed, but how sure are you the screen is certainly working ? Not saying that's the case but it might be a possibility. Do you see anything when shining a torch to the screen in a darker place ? Did you already try if it works when you plug your Mac to an external monitor/Tv ?

Thx for the advice. I have a cintiq drawing tablet that acts like a second monitor when I plug it into the laptop so I can draw on my different applications. I can try that. A friend at work suggests that I check all my connections on the logic board.
