Is my iMac dead?

Hey Fixers,

So, today, my iMac froze while online. I got the multi-lingual screen and shut it down holding the power button. I restarted and got a never ending sequence of chimes, so I powered off again. Next I tried to boot from the SL install disc and got the multi-lingual screen on top of a large power button icon. After the next power off the screen went black and I got no chimes at all. Now i get a flashing LED light, no chimes and no screen activity at all. I first thought my CPU died and then thought the RAM came loose somehow, but now I have no idea.

Does anybody have a clue about what this could be? It seems really dead to me and I have no idea. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What is the sequence of the flashing LED? IS there a pattern?

Hi Richdave,

Funny you should ask that because I was just looking at the online manual for my iMac and it says that: "If the computer detects out-of-specification memory or no RAM installed, the screen will be black and the power LED on the front of the computer will blink once a second to indicate bad or no RAM. Bad RAM can include physically damaged, the incorrect type, or not present. "

So mine IS blinking once per second which indicates a RAM problem. How does RAM just die like that. I've had the same 2 GBs in it for 2 years so might it just be overuse? Any thought? Thanks for your reply!

So, I woke up this morning and remembered that I still have a 512 mb card from when I first purchased this machine. The 2x1GB cards were removed last night (thanks to rj713 and Richdave) and neither worked alone or together. Richdave was correct in suggesting the blinking LED pattern could identify the problem and after testing, I confirmed somehow my RAM died/fried. I put in the 512 mb card and the CHIME was music to my ears. I will buy new RAM today and get this baby back on her feet. Thanks again, guys !

Could be corrosion--remove and clean contacts/reinstall and see if it clears your problem. Also could be a loose stick and this will clear that problem. If you have multiple sticks try using just one.

Thanks, rj713. One problem: the ram arms only release the lower card and the top is still stuck in there tight. ???¿¿¿¿

That's going to take some patience and gentle wiggling. Be careful and good luck.

I had same issue with RAM being stuck! I had to push the Levers up in the direction of the jammed RAM anfd then lever then module out (if that makes sense)

Thanks guys. I got the RAM out after some light jiggling. I'll try to buy replacement (s) tomorrow. One last question: Is it better to use 1x2GB or 2x1GB?

This iMac supports max 2G so suggest you go for 2x 1G
